Read the room
by which panes are lit.

Andon builds the screen as a paper lantern grid. Every surface is a shoji cell — dark when resting, warm when it holds something live. Light is the only chrome you need.

Light the first cell
The signature mechanic

A lattice of cells you light, not boxes you fill

Content lives on a kumiko lattice. A cell at rest is dark wood and shadow; the moment it carries a live reading it warms from the top edge inward, the way paper glows when a lamp is set behind it.

Arrivals

The 19:40 from Kanazawa is at the platform. The cell is warm because the answer is happening right now.

02 / resting

Sidings

No movement booked before dawn. The cell stays dark — quiet is a valid state, not an empty one.

03 / lit

Lantern shop

Two washi orders pressed today, both glazed and drying. Warm, because work was finished on it.

04 / resting

Archive

Last season's records, sealed and shelved. Dark by design; you light it only when you go looking.

05 / lit

Tea room

Kettle on, three settings laid. The warmest cell on the board holds the thing nearest to hand.

06 / resting

Garden gate

Closed for the night. The lattice keeps its shape whether a cell glows or rests.

Light states, not status chips

One ember marks the single thing that needs you

Most cells speak in warm light alone. When one reading truly demands a person — a press jammed, a train held — a single vermilion seal is pressed at a tilt beside it. One ember per board. If everything is urgent, nothing is.

The reading rail keeps its names in plain mono so the lattice can stay wordless and lit.

A good interface is mostly dark. You light only what is true right now, and trust the night to hold the rest.
— Andon field notes, on intentional emptiness
Why night

The same paper, read from the dark side

Minimalist Japanese put ink on a lit page. Andon turns the page over: you stand in the dark garden and read the lantern through its paper. Emptiness is the ground, light is the message, and a single ember is the call to act.

ground

Sumi night

A deep indigo dark carries the whole board. Nothing is white; the page is the night.

glow

Lantern amber

Warm paper-light is the primary accent, used like a highlighter on the live cells only.

ember

One vermilion

Reserved for the single seal that asks for a person. Never a second loud colour.

Set the lamp behind the paper.
