Four machines share one brass rail.
The room is for people. The machines sit below the rail, and when one of them needs a rest it prints a note, stamps it, and says what you can do instead.

Sorting
Printed at 19:20 on the shelf printer.Only a resting machine gets the red stamp.
It says sorry, then says what to do.
Every note from the shelf says what happened, what the counter is doing about it, and one thing you might try. Nothing shouts across the room.
The milk jug ran dry mid-pour, so the steam wand needed a flush.
Give it two minutes, then ask again. Your cup is still on the rail.
The dark batch finished, so I'm resting the roaster for nine minutes.
Tonight's coffee is poured from last night's batch. The next roast is on the house.
The sifter is on pass six of eight and will be done by nine.
Ask the counter to hold a bag back and we'll keep it sealed until you come.
Lamp on from six.
