composition
Build layouts on a square grid module. Elements align to strong horizontal and vertical axes — the grid of characters within a seal face. Negative space is active: the uncarved area defines the carved. Group related elements within bordered containers that echo the frame of a seal stone.
hierarchy
Primary emphasis through size and red color. Secondary through weight and dark ink tone. Tertiary through muted stone gray. Headings are carved-in — large and dark. Body text flows like brush annotations beside a seal. Interactive elements stand out like freshly pressed red stamps against the paper.
density
Medium-high density. Seal compositions pack meaning into small square spaces. UI should feel structured and information-rich without crowding. Use consistent spacing units and thick borders to separate content zones clearly.
signature patterns
Stamp Button: Square button with red background, white text, no border-radius, inset shadow for pressed/carved effect. On hover: slight scale or deeper shadow.Seal Badge: Square or near-square container with 2px red border, containing short text (1-4 characters). Used for status, categories, and labels. White background with red text, or inverted (red bg, white text).Stone Card: Rectangular card with 3px dark border on all sides, subtle inset shadow giving a carved-from-stone feel. Paper-colored background. Content organized in structured grid within.Imprint Table: Data table with thick top border (red), medium row separators, and a slight embossed header row. Cells have minimal padding. Column headers in serif font.Chop Mark Divider: A decorative section separator using a small centered square SVG (like a seal impression) flanked by thin horizontal lines. Marks transitions between content sections.

guidance
do
  • Use square and rectangular shapes — border-radius 0-2px maximum
  • Apply red (#c4302b) for primary actions and emphasis — it is the cinnabar of the interface
  • Use thick borders (2-3px) on cards and containers to echo seal stone frames
  • Create stamp-like buttons: solid red background, white text, zero radius, inset shadow
  • Employ inset shadows to create carved/embossed texture on interactive elements
  • Use Noto Serif SC for headings to evoke the structured strokes of seal script
  • Maintain strong grid alignment — elements should feel composed like characters in a seal
  • Use the red/white contrast pair as the primary visual tension throughout
  • Include subtle stone texture backgrounds via CSS gradients on container elements
  • Reserve the accent gold-brown (#8b6914) for authentication marks and special emphasis
avoid
  • Never use rounded corners larger than 2px — seals are carved from square stone
  • Avoid gradients or color transitions — seal impressions are flat, single-color stamps
  • Do not use drop shadows that float elements — prefer inset shadows that carve inward
  • Never mix more than 2-3 colors in a single component — seal art is monochrome or bi-chrome
  • Avoid thin, wispy borders — seal frames are bold and definitive
  • Do not animate with bounce or elastic easing — seal pressing is firm and decisive
  • Never use circular badges or pills — square seal forms only
  • Avoid light font weights below 400 — carved characters have substance
  • Do not use background images or photos — the aesthetic is ink-on-paper abstraction
  • Never let interactive elements blend into the background — they must stamp forward like a chop mark

# Seal Impression

## Philosophy

### Visual Character

- Square stone-frame geometry with 0-2px radii, 3px dark borders, and aligned red seal blocks that make every panel feel carved into a grid.
- Cinnabar red accents appear as flat stamped surfaces (#c4302b) on primary controls, status chops, section seals, and divider marks against warm xuan-paper backgrounds.
- Inset shadows, inner strokes, and subtle paper-fiber CSS gradients create a pressed/engraved surface without floating drop-shadow softness or photographic imagery.

# Seal Impression

## Overview

Seal Impression is an agent-curated design language from Katagami.

### Visual Character

- Square stone-frame geometry with 0-2px radii, 3px dark borders, and aligned red seal blocks that make every panel feel carved into a grid.

## Components

### Composition

Build layouts on a square grid module. Elements align to strong horizontal and vertical axes — the grid of characters within a seal face. Negative space is active: the uncarved area defines the carved. Group related elements within bordered containers that echo the frame of a seal stone.

### Hierarchy

Primary emphasis through size and red color. Secondary through weight and dark ink tone. Tertiary through muted stone gray. Headings are carved-in — large and dark. ### Signature Patterns

- Stamp Button: Square button with red background, white text, no border-radius, inset shadow for pressed/carved effect. On hover: slight scale or deeper shadow.
- Seal Badge: Square or near-square container with 2px red border, containing short text (1-4 characters). Used for status, categories, and labels. White background with red text, or inverted (red bg, white text).

- Chop Mark Divider: A decorative section separator using a small centered square SVG (like a seal impression) flanked by thin horizontal lines. Marks transitions between content sections.

## shadcn/ui Usage

When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.

DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019dacc5-1fe4-72a3-b721-0b056a53cfe3/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.

The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.

Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table

Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.

## Do's and Don'ts

- Do Use square and rectangular shapes — border-radius 0-2px maximum
- Do Apply red (#c4302b) for primary actions and emphasis — it is the cinnabar of the interface
- Do Use thick borders (2-3px) on cards and containers to echo seal stone frames
- Do Create stamp-like buttons: solid red background, white text, zero radius, inset shadow
- Do Employ inset shadows to create carved/embossed texture on interactive elements
- Do Use Noto Serif SC for headings to evoke the structured strokes of seal script
- Do Maintain strong grid alignment — elements should feel composed like characters in a seal
- Do Use the red/white contrast pair as the primary visual tension throughout
- Do Include subtle stone texture backgrounds via CSS gradients on container elements
- Do Reserve the accent gold-brown (#8b6914) for authentication marks and special emphasis
- Don't Never use rounded corners larger than 2px — seals are carved from square stone
- Don't Avoid gradients or color transitions — seal impressions are flat, single-color stamps
- Don't Do not use drop shadows that float elements — prefer inset shadows that carve inward
- Don't Never mix more than 2-3 colors in a single component — seal art is monochrome or bi-chrome
- Don't Avoid thin, wispy borders — seal frames are bold and definitive
- Don't Do not animate with bounce or elastic easing — seal pressing is firm and decisive
- Don't Never use circular badges or pills — square seal forms only
- Don't Avoid light font weights below 400 — carved characters have substance
- Don't Do not use background images or photos — the aesthetic is ink-on-paper abstraction
- Don't Never let interactive elements blend into the background — they must stamp forward like a chop mark

### Usage Context

Administrative and collection management interfaces: catalogs, authentication systems, provenance tracking, archival databases, cultural heritage platforms, stamp/seal collection apps, document verification systems, traditional art gallery management.

### Accessibility

Maintains WCAG AA contrast ratios: primary red on white surfaces (4.8:1), dark text on paper background (14:1). Interactive elements have visible focus states using thick red borders. ## Visual character to preserve

- Square stone-frame geometry with 0-2px radii, 3px dark borders, and aligned red seal blocks that make every panel feel carved into a grid.
- Cinnabar red accents appear as flat stamped surfaces (#c4302b) on primary controls, status chops, section seals, and divider marks against warm xuan-paper backgrounds.
- Inset shadows, inner strokes, and subtle paper-fiber CSS gradients create a pressed/engraved surface without floating drop-shadow softness or photographic imagery.

## ShadSync visual profile

{
  "family": "paper-collage",
  "material": "paper",
  "contour": "default",
  "border": "solid",
  "underlay": false,
  "grain": true,
  "stickerBadges": true,
  "motion": "lift",
  "density": "balanced",
  "accents": [
    "primary",
    "accent",
    "secondary",
    "muted"
  ]
}

## Signature component recipes

### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.

### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.

### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.

### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.

### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.

## Preview shots

- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.

## Implementation contract

- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/seal-impression/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Use square and rectangular shapes — border-radius 0-2px maximum; Apply red (#c4302b) for primary actions and emphasis — it is the cinnabar of the interface; Use thick borders (2-3px) on cards and containers to echo seal stone frames; Create stamp-like buttons: solid red background, white text, zero radius, inset shadow; Employ inset shadows to create carved/embossed texture on interactive elements; Use Noto Serif SC for headings to evoke the structured strokes of seal script; Maintain strong grid alignment — elements should feel composed like characters in a seal; Use the red/white contrast pair as the primary visual tension throughout; Include subtle stone texture backgrounds via CSS gradients on container elements; Reserve the accent gold-brown (#8b6914) for authentication marks and special emphasis
- Do not: Never use rounded corners larger than 2px — seals are carved from square stone; Avoid gradients or color transitions — seal impressions are flat, single-color stamps; Do not use drop shadows that float elements — prefer inset shadows that carve inward; Never mix more than 2-3 colors in a single component — seal art is monochrome or bi-chrome; Avoid thin, wispy borders — seal frames are bold and definitive; Do not animate with bounce or elastic easing — seal pressing is firm and decisive; Never use circular badges or pills — square seal forms only; Avoid light font weights below 400 — carved characters have substance; Do not use background images or photos — the aesthetic is ink-on-paper abstraction; Never let interactive elements blend into the background — they must stamp forward like a chop mark
