rules
Use a calm column-and-object layout with one dominant work surface, one deliberately offset module, and a few detached badges; avoid equal rows of interchangeable cards.
Balanced product density: tight metadata clusters may use 4px gaps while major decisions breathe with 48px or 64px gaps.
Hierarchy comes from serif display anchors, proximity, scale jumps, and bounded object status rather than bright decorative color or repeated cards.
layout
mobile 375px, tablet 768px, desktop 1200px; off-axis transforms reduce below 700px to protect reading.
Asymmetric 12-column desktop scaffold with deliberate grid break for the active object panel; mobile collapses to one column with rotations reduced.
Whitespace is premium and uneven: compact 4px metadata, normal 16px controls, 48px scene separations, and 64px hero breathing room.
guidance
- Use at most two accent colors at once and assign them to explicit product semantics such as attention and archival confirmation.
- Let one module break alignment while surrounding controls remain crisp and predictable.
- Style forms, tables, dialogs, and navigation with the same ink-border and registration behavior.
- Keep backgrounds clean with large planes only; leave empty space empty when it is serving hierarchy.
- Do not use square-grid backgrounds, default dotted texture, rainbow sprawl, vaporwave gradients, or arbitrary confetti.
- Do not add decorative side rails, left colored card stripes, or row stripes as accent shortcuts.
- Do not use novelty fonts for body text or rotate important copy beyond readable limits.
- Do not turn the language into a generic SaaS dashboard with equal cards and status colors as the identity.

# Offset Atelier Product System
## Philosophy
A disciplined 2026 product language where postmodern wit appears as precise misregistration, off-axis object placement, and typographic contrast inside a calm premium application surface.
### Values
- clean product usability before visual theater
- authored asymmetry with measurable alignment rules
- color used for structure and state rather than garnish
- surprise through interaction geometry rather than nostalgic ornament
### Anti-Values
- pure Memphis costume or vaporwave nostalgia
- decorative side rails, card stripes, dotted wallpaper, square grid backgrounds, and confetti accents
- generic SaaS dashboard sameness
### Visual Character
- Primary panels use a 1.2 degree maximum rotation with counter-rotated inner content so composition feels off-axis without harming readability.
- Surfaces combine warm ivory fields with ink hairline borders and detached geometric badges that sit outside card corners instead of colored stripes.
- Large serif display labels pair with compact grotesk interface text and mono metadata to create typographic contrast beyond size changes.
- Background structure is made from two oversized angled color planes using CSS pseudo-elements, never a repeated dot or square grid pattern.

## Rules
### Composition
Use a calm column-and-object layout with one dominant work surface, one deliberately offset module, and a few detached badges; avoid equal rows of interchangeable cards.
### Density
Balanced product density: tight metadata clusters may use 4px gaps while major decisions breathe with 48px or 64px gaps.
### Hierarchy
Hierarchy comes from serif display anchors, proximity, scale jumps, and bounded object status rather than bright decorative color or repeated cards.
### Signature Patterns
- Offset object panels rotate by -1.2 to 1.2 degrees while inner content counter-rotates to preserve readable baselines.
- Detached corner badges use geometric pill or clipped-ticket shapes positioned outside card bounds to mark semantic state without side stripes.
- Action controls use an ink border plus a second displaced shadow plate that slides into registration on hover or focus.
- Section transitions use bracket labels in mono type paired with oversized serif numerals to create authored sequencing.
## Layout
### Breakpoints
mobile 375px, tablet 768px, desktop 1200px; off-axis transforms reduce below 700px to protect reading.
### Grid
Asymmetric 12-column desktop scaffold with deliberate grid break for the active object panel; mobile collapses to one column with rotations reduced.
### Whitespace
Whitespace is premium and uneven: compact 4px metadata, normal 16px controls, 48px scene separations, and 64px hero breathing room.
## Guidance
### Do
- Use at most two accent colors at once and assign them to explicit product semantics such as attention and archival confirmation.
- Let one module break alignment while surrounding controls remain crisp and predictable.
- Style forms, tables, dialogs, and navigation with the same ink-border and registration behavior.
- Keep backgrounds clean with large planes only; leave empty space empty when it is serving hierarchy.
### Don't
- Do not use square-grid backgrounds, default dotted texture, rainbow sprawl, vaporwave gradients, or arbitrary confetti.
- Do not add decorative side rails, left colored card stripes, or row stripes as accent shortcuts.
- Do not use novelty fonts for body text or rotate important copy beyond readable limits.
- Do not turn the language into a generic SaaS dashboard with equal cards and status colors as the identity.
### Candidate Comparison
- {"name":"Museum Misregistration OS","risk":"could become paper collage nostalgia","strength":"off-axis editorial modules and subtle print-misalignment wit"}
- {"name":"Terminal Memphis Control Room","risk":"terminal cue may dominate and become retro costume","strength":"crisp product chrome with a few eccentric geometry states"}
- {"name":"Neo-Constructivist Product Suite","risk":"can feel aggressive, less premium for daily work","strength":"strong asymmetric composition and typographic contrast"}
- {"name":"Quiet Objet Interface","risk":"too subtle unless interaction moments are authored","strength":"premium white-space discipline, object-like panels, restrained color surprise"}
### Chosen Direction Rationale
The chosen system merges Museum Misregistration OS with Quiet Objet Interface: it keeps clean product discipline and premium whitespace while using off-axis panels, bracketed type contrast, and structural accent objects as the postmodern release valve. It avoids rainbow sprawl, square grids, dotted texture, side stripes, and generic dashboard composition.
### Embodiment Ready Notes
Scene should feel like a premium conservation-planning product with real controls, forms, table states, authored object badges, responsive off-axis composition, and no browser defaults.

- Large serif display labels pair with compact grotesk interface text and mono metadata to create typographic contrast beyond size changes.
- Background structure is made from two oversized angled color planes using CSS pseudo-elements, never a repeated dot or square grid pattern.

## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019e4694-155f-7eb0-8807-9a1e6d1cae32/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts

- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch

## Visual character to preserve
- Primary panels use a 1.2 degree maximum rotation with counter-rotated inner content so composition feels off-axis without harming readability.
- Surfaces combine warm ivory fields with ink hairline borders and detached geometric badges that sit outside card corners instead of colored stripes.
- Large serif display labels pair with compact grotesk interface text and mono metadata to create typographic contrast beyond size changes.
- Background structure is made from two oversized angled color planes using CSS pseudo-elements, never a repeated dot or square grid pattern.

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/offset-atelier-product-system/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Use at most two accent colors at once and assign them to explicit product semantics such as attention and archival confirmation.; Let one module break alignment while surrounding controls remain crisp and predictable.; Style forms, tables, dialogs, and navigation with the same ink-border and registration behavior.; Keep backgrounds clean with large planes only; leave empty space empty when it is serving hierarchy.
- Do not: Do not use square-grid backgrounds, default dotted texture, rainbow sprawl, vaporwave gradients, or arbitrary confetti.; Do not add decorative side rails, left colored card stripes, or row stripes as accent shortcuts.; Do not use novelty fonts for body text or rotate important copy beyond readable limits.; Do not turn the language into a generic SaaS dashboard with equal cards and status colors as the identity.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
