rules
Compose screens like a restrained art-magazine production board: one dominant editorial canvas, a narrow index rail, hard rule divisions, and modules locked to an 8px grid.
Medium-high information density is acceptable when every item sits on the grid; use compact labels, numbered cells, and generous outer margins to keep the page refined.
Hierarchy comes from scale contrast, uppercase compression, black fill density, dither weight, and the rare acidic pixel marker rather than many colors or shadows.
layout
desktop 1200px+, tablet 720px-1199px, mobile below 720px with the index rail becoming a horizontal sprite strip
A strict 12-column desktop grid collapses to 6 columns on tablet and a single column on mobile, all spaced on 8px increments.
Outer margins stay generous and paper-like, but internal components are compact, rule-bound, and aligned to visible bitmap cells.
guidance
- Use one acidic accent sparingly for selection, focus, and key action states.
- Align every rule, label, block, and metric to an 8px grid.
- Make dither and sprite cells carry information such as priority, state, or sequencing.
- Use square corners and committed black borders throughout.
- Do not use neon rainbow retro-game palettes or playful arcade icon clutter.
- Do not add soft shadows, glassmorphism, gradients, or arbitrary rounded cards.
- Do not let pixel motifs float decoratively without controlling hierarchy or state.
- Do not use more than one accent color for brand expression.

# Refined Bitmap Editorial
## Overview
Refined Bitmap Editorial treats pixel art as disciplined publishing infrastructure: bone paper fields, black bitmap typography, strict modular grids, and a single acidic accent turn low-resolution artifacts into luxury interface hierarchy rather than retro decoration.
### Values
- low-resolution precision
- editorial restraint
- grid-native hierarchy
- material contrast between paper and pixel
- single-accent decisiveness
### Anti-Values
- nostalgic arcade clutter
- rainbow gamer palettes
- soft SaaS cards
- decorative pixels without information work
### Visual Character
- A visible 8px bitmap grid is drawn with repeating-linear-gradients on bone paper backgrounds and used to align panels, rules, labels, and data cells.
- Surfaces are square-cornered editorial slabs with 1px black borders, occasional 3px offset black pixel shadows, and no soft blur or rounded card defaults.
- Headlines use compressed grotesque uppercase while labels and metrics use monospaced bitmap-like type with stepped letter spacing and hard line breaks.
- One acidic chartreuse accent appears only as small pixel blocks, active state fills, cursor marks, and editorial crop tabs against an otherwise bone-and-black palette.
- Images, charts, and status fields are rendered through ordered dither fields, checker masks, and sprite-sized 8x8 cells instead of smooth gradients.
## Colors
Use the YAML color tokens as the normative palette. The prose below names the roles agents should preserve when generating UI.

| secondary | `#D8CFB8` |
| success | `#227A35` |
| surface | `#FFF9E8` |

## Components
### Composition
Compose screens like a restrained art-magazine production board: one dominant editorial canvas, a narrow index rail, hard rule divisions, and modules locked to an 8px grid.
### Density
Medium-high information density is acceptable when every item sits on the grid; use compact labels, numbered cells, and generous outer margins to keep the page refined.
### Hierarchy
Hierarchy comes from scale contrast, uppercase compression, black fill density, dither weight, and the rare acidic pixel marker rather than many colors or shadows.
### Signature Patterns
- Pixel crop tabs appear on the top-left or right edge of important panels; they turn chartreuse only for the current selection and otherwise remain black registration blocks.
- Dither plates translate imagery and charts into checkerboard or halftone-like CSS gradients; heavier dither indicates priority while empty bone paper means quiet state.

- Terminal captions sit in black inverse strips with monospaced microcopy and bracketed IDs, creating Emigre-inspired low-resolution editorial annotations.
## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019e66f7-87e8-7143-bf88-12c5e5a06312/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Use one acidic accent sparingly for selection, focus, and key action states.
- Do Align every rule, label, block, and metric to an 8px grid.
- Do Make dither and sprite cells carry information such as priority, state, or sequencing.
- Do Use square corners and committed black borders throughout.
- Don't Do not use neon rainbow retro-game palettes or playful arcade icon clutter.
- Don't Do not add soft shadows, glassmorphism, gradients, or arbitrary rounded cards.
- Don't Do not let pixel motifs float decoratively without controlling hierarchy or state.
- Don't Do not use more than one accent color for brand expression.

# Refined Bitmap Editorial shadcn/ui Components
Artifact: `component-recipes-v1`
Author: `katagami-ui-projection`
Language ID: `en-019e66f7-87e8-7143-bf88-12c5e5a06312`
Slug: `refined-bitmap-editorial`
## Intent
Refined Bitmap Editorial treats pixel art as disciplined publishing infrastructure: bone paper fields, black bitmap typography, strict modular grids, and a single acidic accent turn low-resolution artifacts into luxury interface hierarchy rather than retro decoration.
## Required primitives
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Install with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

## Visual character to preserve

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/refined-bitmap-editorial/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Use one acidic accent sparingly for selection, focus, and key action states.; Align every rule, label, block, and metric to an 8px grid.; Make dither and sprite cells carry information such as priority, state, or sequencing.; Use square corners and committed black borders throughout.
- Do not: Do not use neon rainbow retro-game palettes or playful arcade icon clutter.; Do not add soft shadows, glassmorphism, gradients, or arbitrary rounded cards.; Do not let pixel motifs float decoratively without controlling hierarchy or state.; Do not use more than one accent color for brand expression.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
