A portable design language for agents: download the markdown first, then inspect the preview, tokens, and rules as needed.
Portable DESIGN.md source of truth for most agents and apps.
Compose every screen as a drawn specification sheet on a graphite ground: a summary band of meter-plates on a shared baseline, modules indexed under mono part codes, and each span dimensioned by a hairline measure rule with end-caps and a mono callout.
Hierarchy comes from spacing, alignment, the dimension line, and label/value pairing — not oversized display. A value sits large in mono with its unit dimensioned beneath by a tick scale; scale is spent sparingly.
Medium density with disciplined breathing room; ledgers and panels hold many figures, but every value has a defined slot, a measured padding, and a stated dimension.
The dimension line: a thin measure rule terminated by perpendicular end-caps carrying a centred Space Mono callout, bracketing section widths, value spans, and module gaps; the part-number register (a.01, a.02) and tick-scale datums extend it. Live, focused, or out-of-tolerance states are marked only by a single signal-yellow line, end-cap, dot, or fill — never by flooding a surface.
A 12-column desktop grid collapses to 8 on tablet and a single measured column on mobile; modules span whole columns rather than arbitrary card widths, and the dimension line annotates the spans.
Deliberate and even — consistent gutters and module padding over dramatic voids; every gap should feel engineered and is often dimensioned.

Renders from ~390px to 2560px+; minmax(0,1fr) columns and min-width:0 children keep grids contained, dimension callouts shrink and truncate on small screens; only the full-bleed hero spans 100vw, contained content capped and centred on ultra-wide.
werkbild
Subjects rendered in the Werkbild product-plate technique pushed to its graphite end: one precisely engineered dark Braun-style measuring instrument, matte powder-coated panels, a knurled monochrome dial, an engraved measure-tick rule, a faint keyline grid behind, raking upper-left light, and exactly one signal-yellow indicator on a dark slate field.
One full-bleed hero per landing (--hero-image); feature imagery sits behind a directional graphite veil for legibility. Never use illustrated/generated art for the thumbnail.
# Maßstab ## Philosophy A dark, functional-minimalist interface language in the Dieter Rams / Braun tradition, read through the draughtsman's eye rather than the appliance's. The interface is a specification ledger on a graphite ground, annotated like an engineering drawing. Its signature mechanic is the dimension line — a hairline measure rule with end-caps and a mono callout that brackets every span, the way a draughtsman dimensions a part. Sections are filed under part codes, values carry tick-scale datums, and exactly one signal-yellow mark registers what is live, focused, or out of tolerance. Importance is registered to a slot, never flooded with colour. ### Values - usefulness before novelty — every element is a measure, not a flourish - clarity through reduction and declared dimension - controls and values that state their own size and state - honest hierarchy from spacing, alignment, and the measure — not loud display ### Anti-Values - decorative ornament without an idea - gloss, glass, gradients, or pastel washes - accent colour used as a fill instead of a single signal - ambiguous controls or unstyled browser defaults ### Visual Character - A deep graphite ground carries raised plates and recessed tracks separated by cool hairline keylines; the faint registration grid sits behind as quiet engineering context, never decoration. - Every span is dimensioned — a thin rule terminated by perpendicular end-caps with a centred Space Mono callout — so a screen reads as a drawn specification with its sizes stated, not implied. - Sections are indexed under engraved part codes (a.01, a.02) and values sit over fine tick-scale datums, giving the whole layout the cadence of a parts catalogue rather than a card grid. - Exactly one signal-yellow element is ever lit — a filled measure track, a single end-cap, a knurled-dial pointer, an out-of-tolerance figure — marking what is live without flooding any surface. ## Tokens ### Colors | Name | Value | |------|-------| | bg | `#16181A` | | surface | `#1F2225` | | recess | `#101214` | | text | `#EDEBE6` | | muted | `#8A8F92` | | border | `#2C3033` | | hairline | `#34393D` | | accent | `#E8C400` | | on_accent | `#16181A` | | graphite | `#2E3133` | | success | `#6FA56B` | | warning | `#D9A441` | | error | `#D5604A` | | info | `#6E94B0` | ### Typography - **Base Size**: 17px - **Body Font**: Space Grotesk - **Heading Font**: Space Grotesk - **Mono Font**: Space Mono - **Heading Weight**: 700 - **Heading Transform**: none - **Letter Spacing**: -0.018em - **Google Fonts Url**: https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Space+Grotesk:wght@400;500;600;700&family=Space+Mono:wght@400;700&display=swap ### Radii - **Plate**: 0 - **Card**: 16px - **Pill**: 9999px ### Shadows - **Sm**: 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,.40) - **Md**: 0 14px 34px rgba(0,0,0,.45) - **Inset**: inset 0 0 0 1px #2C3033 ### Spacing - **Base**: 8px - **Scale**: [4,8,12,16,24,32,48,64] ### Surfaces - **Treatment**: matte powder-coat graphite plate - **Card Style**: Raised graphite plates and recessed tracks separated by cool hairline keylines and the dimension line; the rule and the keyline define an edge before shadow does. ## Overview
A dark, functional-minimalist interface language in the Dieter Rams / Braun tradition, read through the draughtsman's eye rather than the appliance's.
### Values
- usefulness before novelty — every element is a measure, not a flourish
- clarity through reduction and declared dimension
- controls and values that state their own size and state
- honest hierarchy from spacing, alignment, and the measure — not loud display
### Anti-Values
- decorative ornament without an idea
- gloss, glass, gradients, or pastel washes
- accent colour used as a fill instead of a single signal
- ambiguous controls or unstyled browser defaults
### Visual Character
- A deep graphite ground carries raised plates and recessed tracks separated by cool hairline keylines; the faint registration grid sits behind as quiet engineering context, never decoration.

## Components
### Composition
Compose every screen as a drawn specification sheet on a graphite ground: a summary band of meter-plates on a shared baseline, modules indexed under mono part codes, and each span dimensioned by a hairline measure rule with end-caps and a mono callout.
### Hierarchy
Hierarchy comes from spacing, alignment, the dimension line, and label/value pairing — not oversized display. A value sits large in mono with its unit dimensioned beneath by a tick scale; scale is spent sparingly.
### Density
Medium density with disciplined breathing room; ledgers and panels hold many figures, but every value has a defined slot, a measured padding, and a stated dimension.
### Signature
The dimension line: a thin measure rule terminated by perpendicular end-caps carrying a centred Space Mono callout, bracketing section widths, value spans, and module gaps; the part-number register (a.01, a.02) and tick-scale datums extend it. Live, focused, or out-of-tolerance states are marked only by a single signal-yellow line, end-cap, dot, or fill — never by flooding a surface.
## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019ef8fa-fa83-7911-bd79-6a45ceb8bb9e/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Separate content with surface, hairline keyline, and the dimension line before reaching for colour.
- Do Dimension important spans and values — state the size with a measure rule and a mono callout rather than implying it.
- Do Reserve signal-yellow for the one thing that is live, focused, filling a meter, or out of tolerance.
- Don't Do not flood a surface with accent colour or introduce a second bright hue.
- Don't Do not add gloss, glass, gradients, or decorative blobs.
- Don't Do not lean on an oversized italic-serif hero when a tight grotesque and a dimensioned datum do the work, or box the nav into a floating pill bar.
- Don't Do not leave any form control as a browser default.
### Accessibility
High-contrast warm off-white ink on graphite; body 17px+; signal-yellow focus rings on every control; status conveyed by labelled pills, dots, and dimensioned callouts, not colour alone; respects prefers-reduced-motion and renders the settled state with no JavaScript.
## Imagery Direction

# Maßstab shadcn/ui Components

## Intent
A dark, functional-minimalist interface language in the Dieter Rams / Braun tradition, read through the draughtsman's eye rather than the appliance's.

## Visual character to preserve
- A deep graphite ground carries raised plates and recessed tracks separated by cool hairline keylines; the faint registration grid sits behind as quiet engineering context, never decoration.

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/massstab/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Separate content with surface, hairline keyline, and the dimension line before reaching for colour.; Dimension important spans and values — state the size with a measure rule and a mono callout rather than implying it.; Reserve signal-yellow for the one thing that is live, focused, filling a meter, or out of tolerance.
- Do not: Do not flood a surface with accent colour or introduce a second bright hue.; Do not add gloss, glass, gradients, or decorative blobs.; Do not lean on an oversized italic-serif hero when a tight grotesque and a dimensioned datum do the work, or box the nav into a floating pill bar.; Do not leave any form control as a browser default.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
