rules
Build screens like editorial art spreads: one dominant text-image gesture, a generous margin system, and secondary modules arranged as captioned evidence rather than equal cards.
Use large high-contrast serif display type for thesis statements, compact sans captions for context, and monospaced folios for navigational indexing.
Moderate density with large areas of negative space; cluster data into annotated blocks and let wash fields separate zones without heavy chrome.
layout
guidance
- Use smoky monochrome value shifts as the main hierarchy tool before adding the oxidized umber accent.
- Pair witty caption fragments with serious museum-like spacing so editorial humor feels collected, not cartoonish.
- Let pseudo-elements create blots, rules, and imperfect registration marks directly in CSS.
- Keep controls legible and accessible with strong contrast, visible focus, and clear pressed states.
- Do not introduce saturated brand colors or glossy glassmorphism that breaks the ink-on-paper premise.
- Do not make every card the same rounded rectangle; vary scale, gutter placement, and caption treatment.
- Do not use decorative splatter so heavily that it compromises reading, scanning, or form completion.
- Do not replace the editorial drawing attitude with generic dashboard icons.

# Smoke Marginalia ## Philosophy Smoke Marginalia translates editorial ink drawing into a museum-grade interface language: spare wit, caption fragments, smoky wash fields, and decisive black marks coexist on warm paper rather than bright digital canvas. ### Values - Editorial intelligence: every layout should feel like a sharp drawing with a point of view. - Ink materiality: line, wash, bleed, grain, and paper remain visible as structural UI devices. - Fine-art restraint: negative space and scale give small marks enough authority to carry the screen. - Print-culture cadence: captions, folios, rules, and marginal notes organize content with page-like rhythm. ### Anti-Values - Bright chromatic decoration that breaks the configured-smoke monochrome atmosphere. - Generic rounded SaaS cards, glossy gradients, and emoji-like illustration that erase ink tactility. - Overfilled dashboards where every module has equal weight and no editorial hierarchy. ### Visual Character - Asymmetric two-column page grids with a wide off-white left gutter reserved for vertical folios, handwritten-style labels, and small ink blots. - Warm charcoal and soot-black hairline drawings sit over fog-gray diluted wash panels built with layered radial gradients and subtle paper noise. - Cards use thin black editorial rules plus one torn-brush accent edge made from dashed borders, pseudo-element strokes, and uneven box-shadow offsets. - Text-image compositions pair oversized serif headlines with compact grotesque captions and inline boxed pull-quotes that feel clipped from a print spread. - Interaction states appear as ink deposits: hover darkens underline strokes, focus creates irregular double outlines, and selected controls fill like a wet brush wash. ## Tokens ### Borders - **Accent Width**: 3px - **Character**: Thin editorial rules interrupted by rough brush-bar pseudo-elements; # Smoke Marginalia
## Overview
Smoke Marginalia translates editorial ink drawing into a museum-grade interface language: spare wit, caption fragments, smoky wash fields, and decisive black marks coexist on warm paper rather than bright digital canvas.
### Values
- Editorial intelligence: every layout should feel like a sharp drawing with a point of view.
- Ink materiality: line, wash, bleed, grain, and paper remain visible as structural UI devices.
- Fine-art restraint: negative space and scale give small marks enough authority to carry the screen.
- Print-culture cadence: captions, folios, rules, and marginal notes organize content with page-like rhythm.
### Anti-Values
- Bright chromatic decoration that breaks the configured-smoke monochrome atmosphere.
- Generic rounded SaaS cards, glossy gradients, and emoji-like illustration that erase ink tactility.
- Overfilled dashboards where every module has equal weight and no editorial hierarchy.
### Visual Character
- Asymmetric two-column page grids with a wide off-white left gutter reserved for vertical folios, handwritten-style labels, and small ink blots.
- Warm charcoal and soot-black hairline drawings sit over fog-gray diluted wash panels built with layered radial gradients and subtle paper noise.
- Cards use thin black editorial rules plus one torn-brush accent edge made from dashed borders, pseudo-element strokes, and uneven box-shadow offsets.
- Text-image compositions pair oversized serif headlines with compact grotesque captions and inline boxed pull-quotes that feel clipped from a print spread.
- Interaction states appear as ink deposits: hover darkens underline strokes, focus creates irregular double outlines, and selected controls fill like a wet brush wash.

## Components
### Composition
Build screens like editorial art spreads: one dominant text-image gesture, a generous margin system, and secondary modules arranged as captioned evidence rather than equal cards.
### Hierarchy
Use large high-contrast serif display type for thesis statements, compact sans captions for context, and monospaced folios for navigational indexing.
### Density
Moderate density with large areas of negative space; cluster data into annotated blocks and let wash fields separate zones without heavy chrome.
### Signature Patterns
- Ink-wash panels use layered radial-gradient backgrounds plus mix-blend-mode multiply overlays to create smoky value fields without bright color.
- Marginal folio rails are vertical writing-mode labels positioned in a wide gutter, paired with small blot pseudo-elements for print-culture indexing.
- Caption cards use 1px black rules, an offset shadow that resembles imperfect registration, and a ::before brush bar with dashed or skewed edges.
- Links and tabs animate by expanding a soot-black underline from 20% to 100%, mimicking a pen line being pulled under the phrase.
- Image placeholders should be abstract line drawings made from CSS borders, pseudo-elements, and sparse splatter dots rather than photographic thumbnails.
## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/smoke-marginalia/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Use smoky monochrome value shifts as the main hierarchy tool before adding the oxidized umber accent.
- Do Pair witty caption fragments with serious museum-like spacing so editorial humor feels collected, not cartoonish.
- Do Let pseudo-elements create blots, rules, and imperfect registration marks directly in CSS.
- Do Keep controls legible and accessible with strong contrast, visible focus, and clear pressed states.
- Don't Do not introduce saturated brand colors or glossy glassmorphism that breaks the ink-on-paper premise.
- Don't Do not make every card the same rounded rectangle; vary scale, gutter placement, and caption treatment.
- Don't Do not use decorative splatter so heavily that it compromises reading, scanning, or form completion.
- Don't Do not replace the editorial drawing attitude with generic dashboard icons.

# Smoke Marginalia shadcn/ui Components
Artifact: `component-recipes-v1`
Author: `katagami-ui-projection`
Language ID: `smoke-marginalia`
Slug: `smoke-marginalia`
## Intent
Smoke Marginalia translates editorial ink drawing into a museum-grade interface language: spare wit, caption fragments, smoky wash fields, and decisive black marks coexist on warm paper rather than bright digital canvas.
## Required primitives
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Install with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

## Visual character to preserve
- Asymmetric two-column page grids with a wide off-white left gutter reserved for vertical folios, handwritten-style labels, and small ink blots.
- Warm charcoal and soot-black hairline drawings sit over fog-gray diluted wash panels built with layered radial gradients and subtle paper noise.
- Cards use thin black editorial rules plus one torn-brush accent edge made from dashed borders, pseudo-element strokes, and uneven box-shadow offsets.
- Text-image compositions pair oversized serif headlines with compact grotesque captions and inline boxed pull-quotes that feel clipped from a print spread.
- Interaction states appear as ink deposits: hover darkens underline strokes, focus creates irregular double outlines, and selected controls fill like a wet brush wash.
## ShadSync visual profile

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/smoke-marginalia/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Use smoky monochrome value shifts as the main hierarchy tool before adding the oxidized umber accent.; Pair witty caption fragments with serious museum-like spacing so editorial humor feels collected, not cartoonish.; Let pseudo-elements create blots, rules, and imperfect registration marks directly in CSS.; Keep controls legible and accessible with strong contrast, visible focus, and clear pressed states.
- Do not: Do not introduce saturated brand colors or glossy glassmorphism that breaks the ink-on-paper premise.; Do not make every card the same rounded rectangle; vary scale, gutter placement, and caption treatment.; Do not use decorative splatter so heavily that it compromises reading, scanning, or form completion.; Do not replace the editorial drawing attitude with generic dashboard icons.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
