rules
Build pages as magazine feature spreads: one dominant illustrated story panel, a disciplined article grid, and small evidence modules for captions, itinerary, specimens, and marginal notes.
Let Newsreader headlines sit large and airy over restrained body copy; use saturated coral only for editorial accents, not for broad fills.
Moderate editorial density with generous margins, compact metadata, and breathable image-like wash zones.
layout
Twelve-column editorial grid on desktop, six columns on tablet, single-column stacked article cards on mobile.
desktop 1200px, tablet 768px, mobile 480px with feature panel stacking before article text
Use wide paper margins and unpainted reserves around type; dense data is grouped into small ruled islands.
guidance
- Keep at least half of large surfaces white or near-white to preserve watercolor luminosity.
- Use one or two saturated accents for navigation, folios, or callout dots only.
- Combine soft wash edges with crisp typographic rules and aligned captions.
- Expose paper grain and handmade variation through CSS textures, masks, and layered gradients.
- Do not flood entire screens with opaque pastel blocks.
- Do not use novelty handwritten fonts or scrapbook stickers.
- Do not let irregular edges break text alignment or interactive affordances.
- Do not introduce more than two saturated accent hues in one composition.

# Vellum Wash Feature Editorial ## Philosophy A transparent editorial watercolor language for article-led storytelling: pale washes behave like interpretive illustration, paper white remains active, and crisp publication structure keeps the softness legible for real content screens. ### Values - luminous paper whites preserved as a primary design material - diluted pigment fields that support rather than overpower editorial hierarchy - handmade edges and blooms translated into controlled interface marks - story-first composition with caption, pull quote, map, specimen, and article modules ### Anti-Values - opaque painterly decoration that obscures content - generic beige minimalism without visible pigment behavior - overly cute scrapbook styling or faux vintage clutter ### Visual Character - Layer translucent radial-gradient wash panels behind editorial cards with mix-blend-mode:multiply and low opacity so paper white remains visible. - Use SVG turbulence paper grain and mask-like deckled borders on feature modules to create handmade edges without raster images. - Pair a narrow magazine grid with crisp hairline rules and small caps labels so soft watercolor fields retain publication clarity. - Place saturated editorial accent chips only on folios, callouts, and route markers while the rest of the palette stays diluted and neutral. ## Tokens ### Colors | Name | Value | |------|-------| | primary | `#21312F` | | secondary | `#6E7468` | | accent | `#D8563C` | | background | `#FFFEFA` | | surface | `#FFF9EF` | | text | `#1C2321` | | muted | `#777267` | | border | `#D8CDBA` | | error | `#9A3D36` | | success | `#4F735A` | | warning | `#B77A2E` | | info | `#4F7691` | | wash_mint | `#BFD5C4` | | wash_citrine | `#E5CF86` | | wash_lilac | `#C8BED5` | | wash_shell | `#E4B7A6` | | paper_shadow | `#EFE6D7` | | ink_wet | `#243734` | ### Typography - **Heading Font**: Newsreader - **Body Font**: Libre Franklin - **Mono Font**: DM Mono - **Base Size**: 16px - **Scale Ratio**: 1.24 - **Line Height**: 1.56 - **Letter Spacing**: -0.015em - **Google Fonts Url**: https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=DM+Mono:wght@400;500&family=Libre+Franklin:wght@400;500;600;700&family=Newsreader:opsz,wght@6..72,400;6..72,600;6..72,700&display=swap ### Spacing - **Base**: 8px - **Scale**: [4,8,12,16,24,32,48,64] ### Radii - **None**: 0 - **Sm**: 5px - **Md**: 14px - **Lg**: 28px - **Full**: 9999px ### Shadows - **Sm**: 0 1px 0 rgba(28,35,33,0.08) - **Md**: 0 18px 45px rgba(60,48,34,0.10) - **Lg**: 0 34px 90px rgba(60,48,34,0.16) ### Surfaces - **Treatment**: warm white paper with layered translucent pigment washes, visible fiber grain, and unpainted reserves - **Card Style**: editorial cards use off-white vellum surfaces, soft bloom halos, fine ink rules, and deckled pseudo-element masks - **Bg Pattern**: subtle SVG turbulence paper grain plus oversized low-opacity wash stains anchored to content rhythm ### Borders - **Default Width**: 1px - **Accent Width**: 2px - **Style**: solid with occasional hand-drawn dashed overlays - **Character**: hairline editorial rules interrupted by irregular watercolor bleeds and deckled edge shadows ### Motion - **Duration**: 260ms - **Easing**: cubic-bezier(.2,.7,.2,1) - **Philosophy**: pigment-like reveals: washes drift a few pixels and opacity blooms in; # Vellum Wash Feature Editorial
## Overview
A transparent editorial watercolor language for article-led storytelling: pale washes behave like interpretive illustration, paper white remains active, and crisp publication structure keeps the softness legible for real content screens.
### Values
- luminous paper whites preserved as a primary design material
- diluted pigment fields that support rather than overpower editorial hierarchy
- handmade edges and blooms translated into controlled interface marks
- story-first composition with caption, pull quote, map, specimen, and article modules
### Anti-Values
- opaque painterly decoration that obscures content
- generic beige minimalism without visible pigment behavior
- overly cute scrapbook styling or faux vintage clutter
### Visual Character
- Layer translucent radial-gradient wash panels behind editorial cards with mix-blend-mode:multiply and low opacity so paper white remains visible.

## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019ddbe3-1406-7331-8cbd-b1fc26c382ca/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Keep at least half of large surfaces white or near-white to preserve watercolor luminosity.

# Vellum Wash Feature Editorial shadcn/ui Components
Artifact: `component-recipes-v1`

Language ID: `en-019ddbe3-1406-7331-8cbd-b1fc26c382ca`
Slug: `vellum-wash-feature-editorial`
## Intent
A transparent editorial watercolor language for article-led storytelling: pale washes behave like interpretive illustration, paper white remains active, and crisp publication structure keeps the softness legible for real content screens.
## Required primitives
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Install with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

## Visual character to preserve
- Layer translucent radial-gradient wash panels behind editorial cards with mix-blend-mode:multiply and low opacity so paper white remains visible.
## ShadSync visual profile

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/vellum-wash-feature-editorial/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Keep at least half of large surfaces white or near-white to preserve watercolor luminosity.; Use one or two saturated accents for navigation, folios, or callout dots only.; Combine soft wash edges with crisp typographic rules and aligned captions.; Expose paper grain and handmade variation through CSS textures, masks, and layered gradients.
- Do not: Do not flood entire screens with opaque pastel blocks.; Do not use novelty handwritten fonts or scrapbook stickers.; Do not let irregular edges break text alignment or interactive affordances.; Do not introduce more than two saturated accent hues in one composition.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
