rules
Lead with a single narrative illustration area, then organize text in magazine-like columns with generous outside margins and offset secondary modules.
Headlines are lyrical serif forms; metadata is small caps mono or sans; body copy stays calm and readable while art carries emotional emphasis.
Low-to-medium density with deliberate pauses, wide gutters, and no more than one dense information cluster per viewport.
layout
Twelve-column editorial grid on desktop, six-column tablet grid, and single-column mobile flow with art blocks preceding copy.
mobile 375px, tablet 768px, desktop 1200px and above
Whitespace is generous and active, especially around watercolor art where margins simulate unpainted paper ground.
guidance
- Use transparent overlapping washes to frame important story moments.
- Keep typography restrained so the illustration remains the emotional lead.
- Let paper grain, deckled borders, and pigment speckles appear in multiple components.
- Use asymmetry and wide gutters to create magazine page rhythm.
- Do not use glossy gradients, neon palettes, or dense dashboard chrome.
- Do not fill every available area; preserve unpainted paper-like negative space.
- Do not pair with aggressive geometric display type that overpowers the art.
- Do not make watercolor accents look like generic pastel blobs without paper texture.

# Watercolor-Led Magazine Storytelling ## Philosophy A quiet editorial visual language where transparent watercolor feature art leads the page, supported by restrained typography, paper-like surfaces, atmospheric hand-rendered accents, and generous negative space that lets narrative imagery breathe. ### Values - transparent wash luminosity over opaque decoration - editorial pacing with calm hierarchy and deliberate pauses - hand-rendered atmosphere that feels commissioned rather than templated - paper texture and pigment behavior as structural design material ### Anti-Values - glossy digital gradients that erase paper ground - crowded card grids with equal-weight modules - heavy display typography competing with the illustration - stock-photo realism or hard-edged tech futurism ### Visual Character - Large asymmetric hero panels reserve one side for layered transparent wash blobs, pigment speckles, and drybrush edge masks behind the story title. - Content sections sit on warm paper surfaces with visible fiber grain created through radial gradients, low-opacity noise overlays, and soft deckled borders. - Typography pairs a literary serif headline with a neutral editorial sans body, using small caps labels and thin rules instead of heavy contrast. - Layouts use wide margins, staggered pull quotes, and floated watercolor vignettes so negative space becomes part of the page rhythm. - Interactive components retain an ink-and-paper feeling through translucent fills, hairline borders, and gentle wash expansion on hover. ## Tokens ### Colors | Name | Value | |------|-------| | primary | `#5F7F8F` | | secondary | `#C98E6A` | | accent | `#D6B45A` | | background | `#F7F1E6` | | surface | `#FFF9EF` | | text | `#27313A` | | muted | `#7D7468` | | border | `#D8C9B5` | | error | `#A6534E` | | success | `#6F8B68` | | warning | `#B8893B` | | info | `#658BA6` | ### Typography - **Heading Font**: Cormorant Garamond - **Body Font**: Source Sans 3 - **Mono Font**: IBM Plex Mono - **Base Size**: 16px - **Scale Ratio**: 1.28 - **Line Height**: 1.58 - **Letter Spacing**: -0.01em - **Google Fonts Url**: https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Cormorant+Garamond:wght@500;600;700&family=IBM+Plex+Mono:wght@400;500&family=Source+Sans+3:wght@400;500;600;700&display=swap ### Spacing - **Base**: 8px - **Scale**: [4,8,12,16,24,32,48,64] ### Radii - **None**: 0 - **Sm**: 6px - **Md**: 14px - **Lg**: 28px - **Full**: 9999px ### Shadows - **Sm**: 0 8px 24px rgba(54, 47, 38, 0.08) - **Md**: 0 18px 50px rgba(54, 47, 38, 0.12) - **Lg**: 0 30px 90px rgba(54, 47, 38, 0.16) ### Surfaces - **Treatment**: warm watercolor paper ground with subtle fiber noise, translucent wash overlays, and pigment blooms - **Card Style**: off-white paper cards with deckled hairline borders, soft inner wash, and light editorial shadow - **Bg Pattern**: layered radial wash stains, faint paper grain, and scattered granulation speckles ### Borders - **Default Width**: 1px - **Accent Width**: 2px - **Style**: solid with broken deckled pseudo-element masks - **Character**: thin ink-wash rules in low contrast, occasionally interrupted like drybrush marks ### Motion - **Duration**: 360ms - **Easing**: cubic-bezier(0.22, 0.61, 0.36, 1) - **Philosophy**: motion should feel like pigment diffusing into damp paper: slow, soft-edged, and never mechanical ## Rules ### Composition Lead with a single narrative illustration area, then organize text in magazine-like columns with generous outside margins and offset secondary modules. ### Hierarchy Headlines are lyrical serif forms; # Watercolor-Led Magazine Storytelling
## Overview
A quiet editorial visual language where transparent watercolor feature art leads the page, supported by restrained typography, paper-like surfaces, atmospheric hand-rendered accents, and generous negative space that lets narrative imagery breathe.
### Values
- transparent wash luminosity over opaque decoration
- editorial pacing with calm hierarchy and deliberate pauses
- hand-rendered atmosphere that feels commissioned rather than templated
- paper texture and pigment behavior as structural design material
### Anti-Values
- glossy digital gradients that erase paper ground
- crowded card grids with equal-weight modules
- heavy display typography competing with the illustration
- stock-photo realism or hard-edged tech futurism
### Visual Character
- Large asymmetric hero panels reserve one side for layered transparent wash blobs, pigment speckles, and drybrush edge masks behind the story title.

## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019ddbe3-6fe1-74b3-8840-11c5c51f26cb/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Use transparent overlapping washes to frame important story moments.
- Do Keep typography restrained so the illustration remains the emotional lead.
- Do Let paper grain, deckled borders, and pigment speckles appear in multiple components.
- Do Use asymmetry and wide gutters to create magazine page rhythm.
- Don't Do not use glossy gradients, neon palettes, or dense dashboard chrome.
- Don't Do not fill every available area; preserve unpainted paper-like negative space.
- Don't Do not pair with aggressive geometric display type that overpowers the art.
- Don't Do not make watercolor accents look like generic pastel blobs without paper texture.

- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip

}
## Visual character to preserve
- Large asymmetric hero panels reserve one side for layered transparent wash blobs, pigment speckles, and drybrush edge masks behind the story title.

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/watercolor-led-magazine-storytelling/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Use transparent overlapping washes to frame important story moments.; Keep typography restrained so the illustration remains the emotional lead.; Let paper grain, deckled borders, and pigment speckles appear in multiple components.; Use asymmetry and wide gutters to create magazine page rhythm.
- Do not: Do not use glossy gradients, neon palettes, or dense dashboard chrome.; Do not fill every available area; preserve unpainted paper-like negative space.; Do not pair with aggressive geometric display type that overpowers the art.; Do not make watercolor accents look like generic pastel blobs without paper texture.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
