A portable design language for agents: download the markdown first, then inspect the preview, tokens, and rules as needed.
Portable DESIGN.md source of truth for most agents and apps.
Scene-first layered depth for a fictional collections studio: one oversized editorial accession pane breaks the grid, a narrow glass navigation rail floats independently, and dense loan/conservation modules sit at lower opacity. The deep cool ground stays visible in the gaps, making depth part of the information hierarchy.
Hierarchy comes from glass opacity, pane size, typographic voice, and Z-depth. Fraunces display headings at -0.035em tracking / 1.12 line-height; Source Sans 3 body at -0.01em / 1.55. Foreground actions are brighter glass pills; secondary data sits on quieter translucent shelves.
Mixed density: the hero accession pane is spacious with 48-96px breathing room, while loan tables and task lists are compact at 8-12px gaps. The contrast prevents uniform dashboard spacing.
Every container shares the .glass treatment (translucent fill + blur(22px) saturate(140%) + 1px luminous hairline + inset top highlight + clipped specular streak); state changes morph via backdrop-filter and scale; an ambient orb field refracts behind the content.
CSS Grid, 12-column base at 1200px; one oversized editorial pane plus inset dense modules, never equal cards. Panels keep a 48px+ margin from the viewport edge on desktop. Tracks use minmax(0,1fr) with min-width:0 children so panes never overflow.
Generous and load-bearing — the cool ground visible between panes IS the depth. Panel padding 24-48px; inter-panel gap 24px; section gap 64-96px; always pad above titles.
Spacious hero panes contrast with compact data shelves.
Renders from ~390px mobile to 2560px+ ultra-wide; single column on mobile with nav and non-essential table columns hidden; contained content capped and centred on ultra-wide while only the hero spans 100vw.
aerogel
Subjects rendered as if fabricated from stacked sheets of semi-transparent frosted glass and aerogel, refracting the layers behind them, with crisp specular edge glints and caustic light ripples over a cool desaturated ground. The landing hero is a layered glass display vitrine.
Use the Aerogel technique for hero and feature imagery; keep it cool, clean, and luminous over the deep teal-navy ground. Avoid glossy plastic icons, warm muddy tones, or any in-image text.
# Vitrine ## Philosophy Vitrine is a liquid-glass material language for collections software, set on a deep cool ground. Translucent frosted panes blur and saturate the field behind them, luminous hairlines catch light along every edge, and a clipped specular streak reads as polished crystal. It keeps the source's thesis that glass only reads as glass over a rich, colourful ground — so depth itself, not decoration, carries the hierarchy. ## Overview
Vitrine is a liquid-glass material language for collections software, set on a deep cool ground. Faithful refinement of Liquid Glass Translucency, brought to standard.
### Values
- Material honesty — surfaces reveal what lies beneath, building hierarchy through depth not decoration
- Layered depth — three Z-depths of glass create a real parallax sense of space
- Contextual legibility — text holds full opacity and weight 500+ so contrast passes AA on any pane
- Refraction needs a ground — glass sits over a deep cool field with drifting orbs, never flat black
- Restrained spectacle — effects serve navigation clarity, never compete with content
### Anti-Values
- Opaque containers that hide the spatial relationships between layers
- Glass over a flat or pure-black background that reads as a generic dark card
- One-sided accent edges on rounded panes
- Decorative blur that reduces readability without adding spatial information
- Boxed-in pill navigation and nested cards

## Components
### Composition
Scene-first layered depth for a fictional collections studio: one oversized editorial accession pane breaks the grid, a narrow glass navigation rail floats independently, and dense loan/conservation modules sit at lower opacity. The deep cool ground stays visible in the gaps, making depth part of the information hierarchy.
### Hierarchy
Hierarchy comes from glass opacity, pane size, typographic voice, and Z-depth. Fraunces display headings at -0.035em tracking / 1.12 line-height; Source Sans 3 body at -0.01em / 1.55. Foreground actions are brighter glass pills; secondary data sits on quieter translucent shelves.
### Density
Mixed density: the hero accession pane is spacious with 48-96px breathing room, while loan tables and task lists are compact at 8-12px gaps. The contrast prevents uniform dashboard spacing.
### Signature
Every container shares the .glass treatment (translucent fill + blur(22px) saturate(140%) + 1px luminous hairline + inset top highlight + clipped specular streak); state changes morph via backdrop-filter and scale; an ambient orb field refracts behind the content.
## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019ef914-505a-7972-b4f1-23e6f1b9d67a/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Set glass over the rich deep cool ground so translucency has a real field to refract.
- Do Use the inset edge glint and clipped specular streak on every glass surface.
- Do Keep text at full opacity and weight 500+ on glass so contrast passes AA.
- Do Build hierarchy from pane size, opacity, and Z-depth, not from coloured fills.
- Do Animate the ambient orb field slowly; it is colour for the glass, not a distraction.
- Don't Put glass over a flat or pure-black background.
- Don't Use opaque container fills that break the material metaphor.
- Don't Add a one-sided accent border to a rounded pane.
- Don't Box the nav into a floating pill or nest cards inside cards.
- Don't Let blur or refraction reduce content legibility.
### Accessibility
Body text 17px+, table rows 14.5px+; foreground text at full opacity and weight 500+ over glass meets WCAG AA on the dark ground. Motion respects prefers-reduced-motion; the settled state renders with no JavaScript. Form controls are explicitly styled with visible focus (lens-cyan border + brightened fill).
## Imagery Direction
### Pairs With
aerogel

### Subjects
- glass display vitrine
- layered glass shelves and specimen panes
- translucent vessels and bowls
- caustic light fields
### Usage
Use the Aerogel technique for hero and feature imagery; keep it cool, clean, and luminous over the deep teal-navy ground. Avoid glossy plastic icons, warm muddy tones, or any in-image text.

## Intent
Vitrine is a liquid-glass material language for collections software, set on a deep cool ground. Faithful refinement of Liquid Glass Translucency, brought to standard.

## Visual character to preserve
- Make the source language's structural identity visible in every component state.
## ShadSync visual profile

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/vitrine/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Set glass over the rich deep cool ground so translucency has a real field to refract.; Use the inset edge glint and clipped specular streak on every glass surface.; Keep text at full opacity and weight 500+ on glass so contrast passes AA.; Build hierarchy from pane size, opacity, and Z-depth, not from coloured fills.; Animate the ambient orb field slowly; it is colour for the glass, not a distraction.
- Do not: Put glass over a flat or pure-black background.; Use opaque container fills that break the material metaphor.; Add a one-sided accent border to a rounded pane.; Box the nav into a floating pill or nest cards inside cards.; Let blur or refraction reduce content legibility.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
