summary
Storybook Spread translates classic and mid-century children’s illustration into interface structure: every screen behaves like an open picture-book spread where image, caption, margin note, and page turn collaborate. It borrows the composed clarity of mid-century educational publishing, the warm hand of ink-and-gouache illustration, and the sequential pacing of picture books, but keeps the system disciplined for modern product screens. The language treats UI as visual storytelling: panels advance attention from left to right, small marginal annotations carry secondary meaning, and important actions feel like page-turn cues rather than generic controls.
values
Sequential clarity: organize content so the eye can travel panel by panel like a picture-book spread, with clear before-and-after relationships.Illustrated restraint: use handmade line texture, spot color, and simple geometric silhouettes without becoming childish or decorative.Image-text interplay: pair labels, data, and prompts as captions that amplify the visual block beside them rather than duplicating it.Mid-century economy: favor flat color fields, strong silhouettes, and purposeful asymmetry over ornamental detail or digital gloss.Tactile page craft: borders, paper grain, registration marks, and page tabs should suggest printing and binding mechanics.Child-readable hierarchy: large contrast jumps and generous caption spacing make the interface understandable at a glance.
anti-values
×No toy-box chaos, rainbow palettes, or preschool mascots that reduce the reference to childishness.×No glossy gradients, glass panels, or app-store hero cards that erase the printed-book tactility.×No generic card dashboard composition; every major region must feel like part of a spread or page sequence.×No dense adult administrative tables without captions, visual anchors, or page-turn rhythm.

composition
Use a spread-first composition: a framed book-page shell contains a narrow masthead, an asymmetric two-page grid, a visible gutter, and captioned panels. Reserve the left page for narrative overview and visual summary, while the right page holds controls, records, and decisions. Place alerts and progress as page annotations, not floating chrome. Important content should align to illustrated blocks and caption baselines, avoiding generic equal-height dashboard tiles.
hierarchy
Headlines use Fraunces at poster scale with tight tracking and short line lengths. Section labels are uppercase IBM Plex Mono captions with ruled underlines. Body copy is IBM Plex Sans, always tightly tracked, with generous line height. Use black and white first; the single vermilion accent marks active page turns, selected tabs, and progress. Secondary green is supportive and should appear as a flat spot-color fill.
density
Moderate and bookish: fewer elements per panel than an enterprise dashboard, but enough data to feel operational. Large margins and caption gutters are required; tables may be dense only inside a bordered reading frame with horizontal scrolling on small screens.
signature patterns
A CSS grid creates two book pages divided by a narrow center gutter with dotted binding stitches.Cards and dialogs use ::before pseudo-elements as offset spot-color mats behind black ink-bordered white panels.Section captions use uppercase mono text with a decorative double-rule underline drawn by background linear gradients.Buttons and selected tabs include folded page-corner triangles constructed with CSS border triangles.Paper grain appears through layered radial-gradient speckles plus small registration-cross corner marks.
layout
density

Moderate reading density: each panel has enough breathing room for children’s-book pacing while tables and controls remain productive for an adult workflow.

grid
Desktop uses a max-width 1320px book shell with 12-column internal grid: 5 columns for the left page, 1 column gutter, 6 columns for the right page. Cards align to 24px gutters and 32px panel padding.
breakpoints
At 1024px the spread becomes an 8-column stacked page pair; at 768px panels stack with the gutter becoming a horizontal stitched divider; at 480px all controls become single-column and full-width.
whitespace
Whitespace should feel like page margin: outer margins are large, captions sit close to the object they describe, and related controls are grouped inside bordered frames rather than scattered.
guidance
do
  • Compose screens as a narrative spread with a visible page frame, gutter, and captioned panels.
  • Use black ink borders and offset spot-color mats on every major card, modal, and table frame.
  • Pair each data region with a caption that explains what the user should notice next.
  • Keep the palette mostly black and white, reserving vermilion for active actions, page turns, and progress.
  • Use paper grain, registration marks, and ruled captions subtly so the surface feels printed, not themed.
  • Make touch targets at least 44px and allow tables to scroll horizontally on mobile.
  • Use Fraunces headlines sparingly for storybook authority and IBM Plex Sans for readable interface text.
avoid
  • Do not use pastel backgrounds, rainbow illustration palettes, or cute mascot decoration.
  • Do not use gradients on buttons, cards, text, or navigation elements.
  • Do not remove the spread structure and replace it with equal generic dashboard cards.
  • Do not mix random radius values; use square panels, 16px controls, 24px large shells, and pill badges only.
  • Do not let form controls show browser default styling; every input must look like ink on paper.
  • Do not overfill panels with dense administration copy without captions and visual anchors.
  • Do not use shadows as glow or depth effects; use offset print-shadow blocks only.

# Storybook Spread

## Philosophy

Storybook Spread translates classic and mid-century children’s illustration into interface structure: every screen behaves like an open picture-book spread where image, caption, margin note, and page turn collaborate. It borrows the composed clarity of mid-century educational publishing, the warm hand of ink-and-gouache illustration, and the sequential pacing of picture books, but keeps the system disciplined for modern product screens. The language treats UI as visual storytelling: panels advance attention from left to right, small marginal annotations carry secondary meaning, and important actions feel like page-turn cues rather than generic controls.

### Values

- Sequential clarity: organize content so the eye can travel panel by panel like a picture-book spread, with clear before-and-after relationships.
- Illustrated restraint: use handmade line texture, spot color, and simple geometric silhouettes without becoming childish or decorative.
- Image-text interplay: pair labels, data, and prompts as captions that amplify the visual block beside them rather than duplicating it.
- Mid-century economy: favor flat color fields, strong silhouettes, and purposeful asymmetry over ornamental detail or digital gloss.
- Tactile page craft: borders, paper grain, registration marks, and page tabs should suggest printing and binding mechanics.
- Child-readable hierarchy: large contrast jumps and generous caption spacing make the interface understandable at a glance.

### Anti-Values

- No toy-box chaos, rainbow palettes, or preschool mascots that reduce the reference to childishness.
- No glossy gradients, glass panels, or app-store hero cards that erase the printed-book tactility.
- No generic card dashboard composition; every major region must feel like part of a spread or page sequence.
- No dense adult administrative tables without captions, visual anchors, or page-turn rhythm.

### Visual Character

- Open-spread layout with a visible center gutter, asymmetric left story panel, and right activity panel using CSS grid columns.
- Ink-outline containers use 2px solid black borders plus slightly offset pale color mats created with pseudo-elements.
- Caption strips attach to cards as small uppercase labels with ruled underline strokes and rounded pill page numbers.
- Paper surface uses subtle radial speckle texture and tiny registration crosses in corners rather than smooth digital fills.
- Primary actions have folded page-corner triangles made with CSS borders, suggesting a page turn at the button edge.

# Storybook Spread

## Overview

## Colors

Use the YAML color tokens as the normative palette. The prose below names the roles agents should preserve when generating UI.

## shadcn/ui Usage

When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.

DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/storybook-spread/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.

The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.

Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table

Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.

# Storybook Spread shadcn/ui Components

Artifact: `component-recipes-v1`
Author: `katagami-ui-projection`
Language ID: `storybook-spread`
Slug: `storybook-spread`

## Intent

Storybook Spread translates classic and mid-century children’s illustration into interface structure: every screen behaves like an open picture-book spread where image, caption, margin note, and page turn collaborate. It borrows the composed clarity of mid-century educational publishing, the warm hand of ink-and-gouache illustration, and the sequential pacing of picture books, but keeps the system disciplined for modern product screens. The language treats UI as visual storytelling: panels advance attention from left to right, small marginal annotations carry secondary meaning, and important actions feel like page-turn cues rather than generic controls.

## Required primitives

- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table

Install with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

}

Typography:

{
  "heading_font": "Fraunces",
  "body_font": "IBM Plex Sans",
  "mono_font": "IBM Plex Mono",
  "base_size": "16px",
  "scale_ratio": 1.25,

}

## Visual character to preserve

- Open-spread layout with a visible center gutter, asymmetric left story panel, and right activity panel using CSS grid columns.
- Ink-outline containers use 2px solid black borders plus slightly offset pale color mats created with pseudo-elements.
- Caption strips attach to cards as small uppercase labels with ruled underline strokes and rounded pill page numbers.
- Paper surface uses subtle radial speckle texture and tiny registration crosses in corners rather than smooth digital fills.
- Primary actions have folded page-corner triangles made with CSS borders, suggesting a page turn at the button edge.

## ShadSync visual profile

{
  "family": "paper-collage",
  "material": "paper",
  "contour": "pebble",
  "border": "solid",
  "underlay": true,
  "grain": true,
  "stickerBadges": false,
  "motion": "still",
  "density": "balanced",
  "accents": [
    "primary",
    "accent",
    "secondary",
    "muted"
  ]
}

## Signature component recipes

### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.

### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.

### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.

### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.

### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.

## Preview shots

- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.

## Implementation contract

- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/storybook-spread/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Compose screens as a narrative spread with a visible page frame, gutter, and captioned panels.; Use black ink borders and offset spot-color mats on every major card, modal, and table frame.; Pair each data region with a caption that explains what the user should notice next.; Keep the palette mostly black and white, reserving vermilion for active actions, page turns, and progress.; Use paper grain, registration marks, and ruled captions subtly so the surface feels printed, not themed.; Make touch targets at least 44px and allow tables to scroll horizontally on mobile.; Use Fraunces headlines sparingly for storybook authority and IBM Plex Sans for readable interface text.
- Do not: Do not use pastel backgrounds, rainbow illustration palettes, or cute mascot decoration.; Do not use gradients on buttons, cards, text, or navigation elements.; Do not remove the spread structure and replace it with equal generic dashboard cards.; Do not mix random radius values; use square panels, 16px controls, 24px large shells, and pill badges only.; Do not let form controls show browser default styling; every input must look like ink on paper.; Do not overfill panels with dense administration copy without captions and visual anchors.; Do not use shadows as glow or depth effects; use offset print-shadow blocks only.

## Copy-paste component example

This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.

```tsx
## Layout notes
{
  "density": "Moderate reading density: each panel has enough breathing room for children’s-book pacing while tables and controls remain productive for an adult workflow.",
  "grid": "Desktop uses a max-width 1320px book shell with 12-column internal grid: 5 columns for the left page, 1 column gutter, 6 columns for the right page. Cards align to 24px gutters and 32px panel padding.",
  "breakpoints": "At 1024px the spread becomes an 8-column stacked page pair; at 768px panels stack with the gutter becoming a horizontal stitched divider; at 480px all controls become single-column and full-width.",
  "whitespace": "Whitespace should feel like page margin: outer margins are large, captions sit close to the object they describe, and related controls are grouped inside bordered frames rather than scattered."
