A portable design language for agents: download the markdown first, then inspect the preview, tokens, and rules as needed.
Portable DESIGN.md source of truth for most agents and apps.
Compose every screen as a publication spread where one dominant narrative column is supported by narrow metadata rails, captions, and telemetry sidebars instead of isolated app cards.
Use oversized literary serif headlines, disciplined mono section labels, and compact mono data strings so readers scan from headline to evidence panels to fine-grain readings without losing place.
High information density is allowed, but spacing separates narrative blocks from technical blocks and preserves calm through consistent baselines and repeated rule spacing.
Every major panel opens with a full-width metadata strap (uppercase mono label, sequence number, timestamp) divided by thin luminous rules; bodies use the asymmetric editorial spread — a wide reading column paired with a narrow annotation/statistics rail separated by a persistent vertical keyline; primary actions use double-line keyline outlines, not filled pills.
A twelve-column desktop grid with generous outer gutters and recurring side rails; major compositions span 7/3/2 or 8/4 groupings before collapsing to stacked sections.
Whitespace works like editorial pacing: generous between major spreads, tighter inside telemetry groups, always reinforced by keylines rather than empty emptiness.
Dense but edited — narrative and technical blocks are separated by space and rules.
Stacks to a single reading column on mobile; side rails collapse below; tables scroll horizontally; only the full-bleed hero spans 100vw.
vitrine
Backlit archival specimens: a single subject filling the frame, emerging from a charcoal ground under a soft radial backlight with one cool and one warm accent rimmed tight to the silhouette — like an illuminated museum exhibit, never a literal display case or framed plate.
Landing hero is a backlit broadsheet leaf with negative space on the overlay side; feature and empty-state imagery follow the same museum-exhibit lighting; never stamp text, frames, or UI chrome onto the plate.
# Folio ## Philosophy A dark-mode design language that composes speculative operational interfaces as a prestige publication: telemetry, dossiers, and decision trails arranged with editorial discipline and calibrated backlight, never neon clutter. ### Values - Rational composition before spectacle - Long-form readability inside dense technical scenes - Speculative atmosphere carried by typography, labeling, and calibrated backlight ### Anti-Values - Arcade-style clutter without hierarchy - Generic SaaS cards with a sci-fi palette pasted on top - Flat black voids and neon flooding ### Visual Character - A rigid multi-column publication grid with hairline dividers and aligned baselines organizes dashboards, reports, and side annotations into one continuous reading surface. - Large serif display headlines sit against disciplined grotesk body text and monospaced telemetry, creating a literary front-page hierarchy where data feels edited rather than dumped. - Charcoal surfaces are interrupted by cool cyan, violet, and amber signal accents, luminous rule lines, and radial glows that stay trapped inside panels so the interface feels backlit but never neon-chaotic. - Every module reads like a dossier spread: stamped metadata bars, marginal notes, numbered sections, and caption rails make operational UI feel like a curated speculative publication. ## Tokens ### Colors | Name | Value | |------|-------| | bg | `#070B12` | | surface | `#111A26` | | surface_2 | `#0C1320` | | text | `#EDF3FF` | | muted | `#93A2BC` | | border | `#25364A` | | accent | `#9FE9FF` | | accent_2 | `#A6A0FF` | | accent_warm | `#FFB86C` | | on_accent | `#06121A` | | primary | `#9FE9FF` | | secondary | `#A6A0FF` | | success | `#6EE7B7` | | warning | `#FFC857` | | error | `#FF6E7A` | | info | `#68D5FF` | ### Typography - **Base Size**: 17px - **Body Font**: Space Grotesk - **Heading Font**: Cormorant Garamond - **Mono Font**: IBM Plex Mono - **Heading Weight**: 600 - **Heading Transform**: none - **Letter Spacing**: -0.02em - **Line Height**: 1.55 - **Google Fonts Url**: https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Cormorant+Garamond:ital,wght@0,500;0,600;0,700;1,500;1,600&family=IBM+Plex+Mono:wght@400;500;600&family=Space+Grotesk:wght@400;500;600;700&display=swap ### Radii - **None**: 0 - **Lg**: 16px - **Full**: 9999px ### Shadows - **Sm**: 0 0 0 1px rgba(159,233,255,0.05), 0 8px 24px rgba(0,0,0,0.40) - **Md**: 0 0 0 1px rgba(159,233,255,0.07), 0 18px 44px rgba(0,0,0,0.50) - **Lg**: 0 0 0 1px rgba(159,233,255,0.09), 0 30px 80px rgba(0,0,0,0.62) ### Spacing - **Base**: 8px - **Scale**: [4,8,12,16,24,32,48,64,96] ### Surfaces - **Treatment**: gradient - **Card Style**: Backlit charcoal panels: layered surface gradient with a faint radial top-glow and a luminous hairline rule opening each block, like illuminated archival paper behind glass. ## Overview
A dark-mode design language that composes speculative operational interfaces as a prestige publication: telemetry, dossiers, and decision trails arranged with editorial discipline and calibrated backlight, never neon clutter.
### Values
- Rational composition before spectacle
- Long-form readability inside dense technical scenes
- Speculative atmosphere carried by typography, labeling, and calibrated backlight
### Anti-Values
- Arcade-style clutter without hierarchy
- Generic SaaS cards with a sci-fi palette pasted on top
- Flat black voids and neon flooding
### Visual Character
- A rigid multi-column publication grid with hairline dividers and aligned baselines organizes dashboards, reports, and side annotations into one continuous reading surface.

### Grid
A twelve-column desktop grid with generous outer gutters and recurring side rails; major compositions span 7/3/2 or 8/4 groupings before collapsing to stacked sections.
### Whitespace
Whitespace works like editorial pacing: generous between major spreads, tighter inside telemetry groups, always reinforced by keylines rather than empty emptiness.
### Density
Dense but edited — narrative and technical blocks are separated by space and rules.
### Responsive
Stacks to a single reading column on mobile; side rails collapse below; tables scroll horizontally; only the full-bleed hero spans 100vw.
### Breakpoints
- **Mobile**: 375px single reading column, full-width controls, horizontally scrollable tables
- **Tablet**: 768px reduces to 6 columns with stacked side rails
- **Desktop**: 1440px uses 12 columns
- **Ultrawide**: 2560px caps and centres contained content; only the hero spans full width
## Elevation & Depth
### Shadows
- **Sm**: 0 0 0 1px rgba(159,233,255,0.05), 0 8px 24px rgba(0,0,0,0.40)

## Shapes
### Rounded
- **None**: `0px`
- **Lg**: `16px`
- **Full**: `9999px`
### Surfaces
- **Treatment**: gradient
- **Card Style**: Backlit charcoal panels: layered surface gradient with a faint radial top-glow and a luminous hairline rule opening each block, like illuminated archival paper behind glass. Never flat black.
- **Bg Pattern**: radial-backlight
### Borders
- **Default Width**: 1px
- **Accent Width**: 2px
- **Style**: solid
- **Character**: Quiet cool technical rules; brighter cyan/amber keylines mark active states and section spines. No grey decorative borders.
## Components
### Composition
Compose every screen as a publication spread where one dominant narrative column is supported by narrow metadata rails, captions, and telemetry sidebars instead of isolated app cards.
### Hierarchy
Use oversized literary serif headlines, disciplined mono section labels, and compact mono data strings so readers scan from headline to evidence panels to fine-grain readings without losing place.
### Density
High information density is allowed, but spacing separates narrative blocks from technical blocks and preserves calm through consistent baselines and repeated rule spacing.
### Signature
Every major panel opens with a full-width metadata strap (uppercase mono label, sequence number, timestamp) divided by thin luminous rules; bodies use the asymmetric editorial spread — a wide reading column paired with a narrow annotation/statistics rail separated by a persistent vertical keyline; primary actions use double-line keyline outlines, not filled pills.
## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019ef8e6-5a45-77e2-aaef-ff637d7dd07c/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Pair expressive serif headlines with neutral grotesk body text and mono labels.
- Do Use metadata straps, marginal notes, and caption rails to make dense UI feel curated.
- Do Keep accent light localized to headings, signals, and active controls so reading comfort stays high in dark mode.
- Do Let the nav sit open across the header; build hierarchy with space, type, and surface.
- Don't Flood the interface with saturated neon on every element.
- Don't Break the grid with randomly sized floating cards, or nest cards inside cards.
- Don't Use generic dashboard widgets without narrative framing or annotation.
- Don't Render a flat black void with no backlight.
### Accessibility
Body text 17px+, table rows 14.5px+; high contrast ink (#EDF3FF) on charcoal; accents reserved for signals never load-bearing text; explicit focus keylines on every control; respects prefers-reduced-motion; settled state visible with no JavaScript.
## Imagery Direction
### Pairs With
vitrine
### Summary
Backlit archival specimens: a single subject filling the frame, emerging from a charcoal ground under a soft radial backlight with one cool and one warm accent rimmed tight to the silhouette — like an illuminated museum exhibit, never a literal display case or framed plate.
### Subjects
- a weathered open broadsheet leaf
- a relay instrument
- a folded dossier
- an archival plate
- a single editorial artifact
### Usage
Landing hero is a backlit broadsheet leaf with negative space on the overlay side; feature and empty-state imagery follow the same museum-exhibit lighting; never stamp text, frames, or UI chrome onto the plate.

## Visual character to preserve
- A rigid multi-column publication grid with hairline dividers and aligned baselines organizes dashboards, reports, and side annotations into one continuous reading surface.

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/folio/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Pair expressive serif headlines with neutral grotesk body text and mono labels.; Use metadata straps, marginal notes, and caption rails to make dense UI feel curated.; Keep accent light localized to headings, signals, and active controls so reading comfort stays high in dark mode.; Let the nav sit open across the header; build hierarchy with space, type, and surface.
- Do not: Flood the interface with saturated neon on every element.; Break the grid with randomly sized floating cards, or nest cards inside cards.; Use generic dashboard widgets without narrative framing or annotation.; Render a flat black void with no backlight.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
