rules
Build every screen as a manga page that has been overprinted by a terminal session: one dominant existential void, several cropped ink panels, and a compact command column that anchors the reading path.
Alternate blank contemplative fields with compressed command blocks; dense zones should feel intentionally localized, never spread evenly across the viewport.
Hierarchy begins with huge condensed lowercase titles, moves to bracketed mono system labels, then to small shell comments and timestamps. Empty gutters separate beats more strongly than decoration.
layout
>=1180px cinematic split-page grid; 760-1179px two-column dossier stack with preserved terminal rail; <760px single-column vertical manga scroll with command panes between panels.
Desktop uses a 12-column asymmetric manga grid with 24px gutters, a dominant 7-column existential panel, and a 3-column command pane pinned to one edge.
Maintain 64-128px blank fields around hero statements and 4-12px internal spacing inside terminal clusters so silence and compression visibly alternate.
guidance
- Use pure black, bone white, gray ink texture, and only a pin-sized phosphor green accent for operational state.
- Compose with uneven manga panel timing: blank panels, dense command inserts, cinematic crops, and hard gutters.
- Write UI copy as terminal evidence: lowercase prompts, /usr paths, bracketed system labels, timestamps, and shell comments.
- Make borders, scanlines, caret cursors, and halftone strips visible enough to guide structure but never decorative enough to become noise.
- Do not use broad green fields, neon gradients, magenta/cyan cyberpunk clichés, or colorful anime poster styling.
- Do not default to equal card grids, rounded SaaS modules, generic charts, or soft glassmorphism.
- Do not fill every surface with code; leave large fields empty so the terminal details feel intentional.
- Do not use playful manga expressions, stickers, speech balloons, emojis, or mascot illustration.

# Monochrome Manga Terminal Noir ## Philosophy A restrained black-and-white interface language where manga panel timing, command-line evidence, and noir surveillance stillness make software feel like an existential terminal observed through ink and glass. ### Values - Use silence as structure: broad bone-white or black fields must carry as much meaning as dense terminal clusters. - Keep the palette almost monochrome so linework, gutters, typography, and panel rhythm define the experience before color does. - Treat interface text as evidence: prompts, file paths, checksums, timestamps, and bracketed labels reveal state without decorative HUD excess. - Prefer adult anime calm over spectacle: cinematic crops, hard silhouettes, and diagnostic restraint rather than neon maximalism. ### Anti-Values - Rainbow cyberpunk glows, vaporwave gradients, gamer HUD clutter, and broad accent-color panels. - Generic SaaS cards, friendly pill interfaces, bubbly icon sets, and centered marketing symmetry. - Cute manga motifs, expressive stickers, loud speech bubbles, or comic coloring that breaks the noir discipline. - Dense code wallpaper used everywhere; terminal texture must be paced by negative space. ### Visual Character - Asymmetric CSS grid with oversized white gutters acting as manga pauses between black ink panels and narrow diagnostic panes. - Square-corner terminal windows using 1px black or white borders, shell prompts, caret cursors, and clipped code fragments aligned to panel edges. - Halftone and scanline pseudo-elements layered at low opacity over monochrome panels rather than broad color or photographic realism. - One tiny phosphor-green accent token restricted to blinking carets, status LEDs, prompt glyphs, and single-line annotations. - Cinematic crop masks and hard black rectangles that interrupt content like manga speed cuts while preserving a clean editorial grid. ## Tokens ### Borders - **Accent Width**: 2px - **Character**: Hairline black-on-paper or white-on-ink dividers; accent borders appear only as a short phosphor cursor, status LED, or command prompt marker. - **Default Width**: 1px - **Style**: solid ### Colors | Name | Value | |------|-------| | accent | `#78FF9A` | | background | `#0A0A0A` | | border | `#D8D1C3` | | error | `#D96B5F` | | info | `#9BA7A8` | | muted | `#8D8A82` | | primary | `#050505` | | secondary | `#F4F0E7` | | success | `#78FF9A` | | surface | `#F7F3EA` | | text | `#F8F5EE` | | warning | `#C89A4B` | ### Motion - **Duration**: 160ms - **Easing**: steps(2, end) - **Philosophy**: Mechanical and sparse: a caret blink, a two-frame scanline drift, and instantaneous negative inversion on hover; no cinematic parallax or elastic motion. ### Radii - **Full**: 9999px - **Lg**: 4px - **Md**: 2px - **None**: 0 - **Sm**: 0 ### Shadows - **Lg**: 0 48px 140px rgba(0,0,0,.72) - **Md**: 0 20px 70px rgba(0,0,0,.45) - **Sm**: 0 1px 0 rgba(255,255,255,.16) ### Spacing - **Base**: 8px - **Scale**: [4,8,12,16,24,32,48,64,96,128] ### Surfaces - **Bg Pattern**: Sparse coordinate ticks, filesystem paths, shell comments, frame counters, and low-opacity terminal strings embedded in the margins. - **Card Style**: Square manga-terminal panels with hard monochrome fills, hairline borders, clipped corners made from black rectangles, and no soft card stack. - **Treatment**: Matte ink black and bone paper surfaces with grain, halftone dots, and scanlines applied through pseudo-elements at very low opacity. ### Typography - **Base Size**: 16px - **Body Font**: IBM Plex Sans Condensed - **Google Fonts Url**: https://fonts.googleapis.com/css2?family=Barlow+Condensed:wght@500;600;700&family=IBM+Plex+Mono:wght@400;500;600&family=IBM+Plex+Sans+Condensed:wght@400;500;600&display=swap - **Heading Font**: Barlow Condensed - **Letter Spacing**: -0.015em - **Line Height**: 1.48 - **Mono Font**: IBM Plex Mono - **Scale Ratio**: 1.22 ## Rules ### Composition Build every screen as a manga page that has been overprinted by a terminal session: one dominant existential void, several cropped ink panels, and a compact command column that anchors the reading path. ### Density Alternate blank contemplative fields with compressed command blocks; dense zones should feel intentionally localized, never spread evenly across the viewport. ### Hierarchy Hierarchy begins with huge condensed lowercase titles, moves to bracketed mono system labels, then to small shell comments and timestamps. # Monochrome Manga Terminal Noir
## Overview
A restrained black-and-white interface language where manga panel timing, command-line evidence, and noir surveillance stillness make software feel like an existential terminal observed through ink and glass.
### Values
- Use silence as structure: broad bone-white or black fields must carry as much meaning as dense terminal clusters.
### Anti-Values
- Rainbow cyberpunk glows, vaporwave gradients, gamer HUD clutter, and broad accent-color panels.
- Generic SaaS cards, friendly pill interfaces, bubbly icon sets, and centered marketing symmetry.
- Cute manga motifs, expressive stickers, loud speech bubbles, or comic coloring that breaks the noir discipline.
- Dense code wallpaper used everywhere; terminal texture must be paced by negative space.
### Visual Character
- Asymmetric CSS grid with oversized white gutters acting as manga pauses between black ink panels and narrow diagnostic panes.
- Square-corner terminal windows using 1px black or white borders, shell prompts, caret cursors, and clipped code fragments aligned to panel edges.
- Halftone and scanline pseudo-elements layered at low opacity over monochrome panels rather than broad color or photographic realism.
- One tiny phosphor-green accent token restricted to blinking carets, status LEDs, prompt glyphs, and single-line annotations.
- Cinematic crop masks and hard black rectangles that interrupt content like manga speed cuts while preserving a clean editorial grid.
## Colors
Use the YAML color tokens as the normative palette. The prose below names the roles agents should preserve when generating UI.

## Components
### Composition
Build every screen as a manga page that has been overprinted by a terminal session: one dominant existential void, several cropped ink panels, and a compact command column that anchors the reading path.
### Density
Alternate blank contemplative fields with compressed command blocks; dense zones should feel intentionally localized, never spread evenly across the viewport.
### Hierarchy
Hierarchy begins with huge condensed lowercase titles, moves to bracketed mono system labels, then to small shell comments and timestamps. Empty gutters separate beats more strongly than decoration.
### Signature Patterns
- Panel gutters are implemented as real grid gaps and oversized blank cells, with pseudo-element frame numbers and crop marks attached to the edges.
- Terminal overlays use monospace prompt rows, blinking block carets, file path breadcrumbs, and comment lines clipped inside manga panels.
- Halftone fields and scanline blocks are CSS gradients masked into rectangular strips so ink texture stays monochrome and disciplined.
- Accent color is a functional micro-signal only: prompt glyph, status LED, one caret, or a single annotation line under twelve words.
- Hard black crop bars intrude over white panels at right angles, creating anime-noir surveillance crops without rounded dashboard chrome.
## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/monochrome-manga-terminal-noir/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Use pure black, bone white, gray ink texture, and only a pin-sized phosphor green accent for operational state.
- Do Compose with uneven manga panel timing: blank panels, dense command inserts, cinematic crops, and hard gutters.
- Do Write UI copy as terminal evidence: lowercase prompts, /usr paths, bracketed system labels, timestamps, and shell comments.
- Do Make borders, scanlines, caret cursors, and halftone strips visible enough to guide structure but never decorative enough to become noise.
- Don't Do not use broad green fields, neon gradients, magenta/cyan cyberpunk clichés, or colorful anime poster styling.
- Don't Do not default to equal card grids, rounded SaaS modules, generic charts, or soft glassmorphism.
- Don't Do not fill every surface with code; leave large fields empty so the terminal details feel intentional.
- Don't Do not use playful manga expressions, stickers, speech balloons, emojis, or mascot illustration.
### Accessibility
Preserve high contrast between ink and paper, pair the green accent with shape or text labels, keep mono diagnostics at readable sizes, and disable blink/scan motion under reduced-motion preferences.

Language ID: `monochrome-manga-terminal-noir`
Slug: `monochrome-manga-terminal-noir`
## Intent
A restrained black-and-white interface language where manga panel timing, command-line evidence, and noir surveillance stillness make software feel like an existential terminal observed through ink and glass.

- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip

## Visual character to preserve
- Asymmetric CSS grid with oversized white gutters acting as manga pauses between black ink panels and narrow diagnostic panes.
- Square-corner terminal windows using 1px black or white borders, shell prompts, caret cursors, and clipped code fragments aligned to panel edges.
- Halftone and scanline pseudo-elements layered at low opacity over monochrome panels rather than broad color or photographic realism.
- One tiny phosphor-green accent token restricted to blinking carets, status LEDs, prompt glyphs, and single-line annotations.
- Cinematic crop masks and hard black rectangles that interrupt content like manga speed cuts while preserving a clean editorial grid.
## ShadSync visual profile

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/monochrome-manga-terminal-noir/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Use pure black, bone white, gray ink texture, and only a pin-sized phosphor green accent for operational state.; Compose with uneven manga panel timing: blank panels, dense command inserts, cinematic crops, and hard gutters.; Write UI copy as terminal evidence: lowercase prompts, /usr paths, bracketed system labels, timestamps, and shell comments.; Make borders, scanlines, caret cursors, and halftone strips visible enough to guide structure but never decorative enough to become noise.
- Do not: Do not use broad green fields, neon gradients, magenta/cyan cyberpunk clichés, or colorful anime poster styling.; Do not default to equal card grids, rounded SaaS modules, generic charts, or soft glassmorphism.; Do not fill every surface with code; leave large fields empty so the terminal details feel intentional.; Do not use playful manga expressions, stickers, speech balloons, emojis, or mascot illustration.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
