## Philosophy

Tidewell is a multiplane atmospheric interface language — depth is the layout. It takes the brief that produced Skywash (paint the interface as weather, carry depth through tonal bands, float small precise instruments in a living landscape) and reads it vertically and structurally instead of as a horizon. Content sits on translucent vellum plates set front-to-back through a painted mist; a calibrated depth-ruler on the edge reads exactly how far each plate recedes. Hierarchy stops being a feeling and becomes something you can measure. The mood is a rain-washed terraced valley under lifting monsoon mist: cool jade and wet-slate green on a misted celadon-stone ground, with one warm clay-ochre light marking the live cue.

### Values

- depth as the layout, not boxes
- hierarchy you can measure with a ruler
- atmosphere painted, never framed
- small precise instruments over a broad diffuse field
- one warm light cue in a cool field

### Anti-Values

- white-by-default minimalism
- centered boxed dashboards of equal cards
- hard borders and black drop-shadows
- stacks of equal-weight CTAs
- busy texture that competes with content

### Visual Character

- a misted celadon-stone ground — a warm rain-green, never white, never a cyan sky
- translucent vellum plates with backdrop blur and an inner top-light bloom, parted by mist and offset rather than borders
- a staggered multiplane stack: plates step on a diagonal so the offset itself reads as depth (near flush, mid in, far further in)
- a calibrated depth-ruler tick rail down the edge that reads each plate's depth (00 NEAR / 12 MID / 24 FAR)
- soft radial mist veils behind every scene, and a single clay-ochre warm light marking the live cue

## Guidance

### Do

- read the interface vertically as a stack of depths, measured by the ruler
- suspend content on translucent vellum plates parted by mist and offset
- keep one clay-ochre warm light as the single live cue over a cool jade field
- tag plates with their depth and let near/mid/far carry hierarchy
- let the painted mist field unify multiple plates

### Don't

- do not default the ground to white or to a cool sky — Tidewell is rain-green stone

- do not add hard borders or black drop-shadows; depth comes from value, blur, and offset

### Accessibility

Body text on the celadon ground is 12.1:1; muted is 5.4:1; white on jade/pine for buttons is 5.8:1 and 9.8:1; dark ink on clay is 6.1:1. Every form control is explicitly styled with a visible jade focus ring (no browser defaults). Motion respects prefers-reduced-motion and the settled state renders with no JS.

# Tidewell

## Overview

## shadcn/ui Usage

When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.

DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019ef800-7159-7562-9428-0174a2af8c7a/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.

The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.

Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table

Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.

## Do's and Don'ts

- Do read the interface vertically as a stack of depths, measured by the ruler
- Do suspend content on translucent vellum plates parted by mist and offset
- Do keep one clay-ochre warm light as the single live cue over a cool jade field
- Do tag plates with their depth and let near/mid/far carry hierarchy
- Do let the painted mist field unify multiple plates
- Don't do not default the ground to white or to a cool sky — Tidewell is rain-green stone
- Don't do not box the chrome: no nested plates, no nav trapped in a pill bar
- Don't do not add hard borders or black drop-shadows; depth comes from value, blur, and offset
- Don't do not let the warm cue spread; one clay light per scene
- Don't do not crowd the field with equal-weight buttons

### Accessibility

Body text on the celadon ground is 12.1:1; muted is 5.4:1; white on jade/pine for buttons is 5.8:1 and 9.8:1; dark ink on clay is 6.1:1. Every form control is explicitly styled with a visible jade focus ring (no browser defaults). Motion respects prefers-reduced-motion and the settled state renders with no JS.
