A portable design language for agents: download the markdown first, then inspect the preview, tokens, and rules as needed.
Portable DESIGN.md source of truth for most agents and apps.
Plot content to an exposed coordinate field on a deep midnight ground. Frame measured planes with cyan corner ticks, not boxes or shadows; separate modules with hairline rules and open space. A dimension scale anchors the hero foot and a left platform track docks dashboard sections.
Hierarchy comes from position on the field, scale jumps, weight, and the rationed signal ink. Headlines are oversized flush-left Archivo with a colour-pop mark on one word; labels are compact uppercase mono on a baseline grid; figures are tabular mono.
High legibility at medium-high density: large outer margins, tight headline leading, ordered tables, an 8px baseline rhythm. Whitespace is architectural, not padding inflation.
An exposed coordinate field with cyan corner ticks and a dimension scale; a single travelling vermilion crosshair fixes the live datum; numerics fall into tabular mono and the signal ink lands only on the fixed or live value.
A measured field with large outer margins and flexible content columns; wide content spans the main column, readouts and meters take shorter bands; the dashboard runs a left platform track (236px) with numbered stops. Modules separate with hairline rules and cyan corner ticks.
Structural and architectural: large outer margins, 48-96px between sections, an 8px baseline rhythm inside content; negative space frames typography like a poster.
medium-high
Desktop keeps the full field and multi-column readouts; at ~900px plots and pairs stack and nav links collapse; at ~560px the dashboard rail collapses to a horizontal track of section words, tiles stack, tables drop non-essential columns, and the hero headline shrinks with clamp() so it never clips at a true 390px viewport.
offset-spot-print
Flat-layered spot-ink screenprint imagery on coarse paper: a deep midnight ground, warm bone planes, and one signal vermilion mark, with a soft halftone mid-tone screen, a hair of misregistration, and printer's registration crop marks at the corners. Sparse and diagrammatic — aerial survey plans, rail yards, plotted city blocks; prefer live data, numbered fields, and typographic rhythm over decorative pictures.
One full-bleed screenprint hero with a calm dark third reserved for the headline overlay; otherwise let data and type lead.

# Sextant
## Overview
Sextant is a dark night-survey console for systems read under pressure. It plots every value against an exposed coordinate field — corner ticks, a dimension scale, and a single travelling crosshair that fixes the live datum — and spends one rationed signal ink only on the figure that matters. Order comes from position on the field and tabular figures, never from boxes or shadow.
### Values
- a value is a point plotted on a measured field
- one rationed signal ink, landing only on the live fix
- position on the coordinate field is hierarchy
- tabular mono so figures line up like a survey sheet
- hairline rules and open space on a deep midnight ground, never boxes and shadows
### Anti-Values
- defaulting the ground to white
- an accent bar stamped on every section or a signal-ink flood
- centred, symmetric, decorative composition
- rounded friendly cards and soft drop shadows
- the oversized italic serif or the serif-italic headline swap
### Visual Character
- a deep midnight-ink survey bed with warm bone type and one rationed signal vermilion
- an exposed coordinate field framed by cyan corner ticks and a dimension scale
- a single travelling crosshair plot-head that fixes the live datum
- hairline graphite-blue rules separating modules and rows with no decorative framing
- oversized flush-left neo-grotesk headlines with a colour-pop mark on one word
- small uppercase mono labels tracked wide and aligned to a baseline grid

- **Style**: solid
- **Character**: hairline graphite-blue rules as structural dividers; cyan L-ticks mark coordinate corners; a 2px bone key line tops tables
## Components
### Composition
Plot content to an exposed coordinate field on a deep midnight ground. Frame measured planes with cyan corner ticks, not boxes or shadows; separate modules with hairline rules and open space. A dimension scale anchors the hero foot and a left platform track docks dashboard sections.
### Hierarchy
Hierarchy comes from position on the field, scale jumps, weight, and the rationed signal ink. Headlines are oversized flush-left Archivo with a colour-pop mark on one word; labels are compact uppercase mono on a baseline grid; figures are tabular mono.
### Density
High legibility at medium-high density: large outer margins, tight headline leading, ordered tables, an 8px baseline rhythm. Whitespace is architectural, not padding inflation.
### Signature
An exposed coordinate field with cyan corner ticks and a dimension scale; a single travelling vermilion crosshair fixes the live datum; numerics fall into tabular mono and the signal ink lands only on the fixed or live value.
## shadcn/ui Usage
When the target app uses shadcn/ui, copy DESIGN.md with shadcn instead of the plain DESIGN.md. It contains the same Katagami design-language source plus the shadcn/ui primitives, imports, theme variables, component recipes, and preview-shot guidance.
DESIGN.md with shadcn: `/language/en-019efd3c-d7e7-7cc2-9df0-f854471e45ff/DESIGN.with-shadcn.md`.
The shadcn page also exposes optional machine-readable files for automation, but the human-facing handoff is DESIGN.md with shadcn.
Install recommended primitives with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.
Use these primitives in shadcn apps:
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Implementation rule for agents: import shadcn primitives from `@/components/ui/*`, apply the generated CSS variables first, then compose the language-specific recipes from the companion MD. Katagami remains the source of truth; shadcn names are the implementation surface.
## Do's and Don'ts
- Do Plot values to the coordinate field; let position carry hierarchy.
- Do Ration the vermilion to the live or fixed figure only.
- Do Set every number in tabular mono so columns align.
- Do Separate modules with hairline rules and cyan corner ticks instead of boxes.
- Do Keep the ground deep midnight ink; let bone type and one signal ink do the work.
- Don't Do not stamp the accent bar on every section or flood a panel with signal ink.
- Don't Do not centre headlines or balance the page symmetrically.
- Don't Do not add rounded friendly cards, soft shadows, or glass.
- Don't Do not use the serif-italic headline swap or an oversized italic serif.
- Don't Do not default the ground to white; this language lives in the dark.
### Accessibility
Warm bone text on a deep midnight ground holds high contrast; the rationed vermilion and cyan are reinforced with labels and dots, never colour alone; focus states use a cyan border; motion respects prefers-reduced-motion and the settled state renders with no JS.
## Imagery Direction
### Pairs With
offset-spot-print
### Summary
Flat-layered spot-ink screenprint imagery on coarse paper: a deep midnight ground, warm bone planes, and one signal vermilion mark, with a soft halftone mid-tone screen, a hair of misregistration, and printer's registration crop marks at the corners. Sparse and diagrammatic — aerial survey plans, rail yards, plotted city blocks; prefer live data, numbered fields, and typographic rhythm over decorative pictures.
### Subjects
- aerial survey plans and plotted city blocks
- rail yards and platforms
- single iconic objects
- harbour and coastline charts
- three-quarter portraits
### Usage
One full-bleed screenprint hero with a calm dark third reserved for the headline overlay; otherwise let data and type lead.

# Sextant shadcn/ui Components
Artifact: `component-recipes-v1`
Author: `katagami-ui-projection`
Language ID: `en-019efd3c-d7e7-7cc2-9df0-f854471e45ff`
Slug: `sextant`
## Intent
Sextant is a dark night-survey console for systems read under pressure. It plots every value against an exposed coordinate field — corner ticks, a dimension scale, and a single travelling crosshair that fixes the live datum — and spends one rationed signal ink only on the figure that matters. Order comes from position on the field and tabular figures, never from boxes or shadow.
## Required primitives
- button
- card
- input
- textarea
- select
- dialog
- sheet
- tabs
- badge
- separator
- checkbox
- switch
- slider
- tooltip
- dropdown-menu
- table
Install with `npx shadcn@latest add button card input textarea select dialog sheet tabs badge separator checkbox switch slider tooltip dropdown-menu table`.

}
## Visual character to preserve
- a deep midnight-ink survey bed with warm bone type and one rationed signal vermilion
- an exposed coordinate field framed by cyan corner ticks and a dimension scale
- a single travelling crosshair plot-head that fixes the live datum
- hairline graphite-blue rules separating modules and rows with no decorative framing
- oversized flush-left neo-grotesk headlines with a colour-pop mark on one word
- small uppercase mono labels tracked wide and aligned to a baseline grid
## ShadSync visual profile

## Signature component recipes
### Button
Use `Button` for primary, secondary, outline, and ghost actions. Primary actions must expose the language's strongest contrast pair, while secondary and ghost actions should preserve the surface treatment instead of falling back to default neutral SaaS styling.
### Card
Use `Card`, `CardHeader`, `CardContent`, `CardFooter`, and `CardAction` as the main composition frame. Cards should demonstrate the language's surface, border, hierarchy, and density rules rather than appearing as generic rounded rectangles.
### Input and Textarea
Use `Input` and `Textarea` with visible focus rings, field labels, validation states, and the language's rhythm. Forms should show real product content, not placeholder-only controls.
### Select, Tabs, and Table
Use `Select`, `Tabs`, and `Table` to prove navigation, filtering, and dense data states. The table should show row rhythm, separators, hover/focus states, and an empty or status state when the language calls for it.
### Dialog and Sheet
Use `Dialog` for centered decisions and `Sheet` for contextual editing. Both should inherit the language's spacing, border, overlay, and motion rules.
## Preview shots
- `application-shell`: dashboard or workspace shell with navigation, cards, forms, and state badges.
- `detail-editor`: focused editing flow using input, textarea, select, switch/checkbox, dialog or sheet, and action buttons.
- `data-operations`: table-heavy operational view with tabs, dropdown menu affordances, badges, and destructive/empty states.
- Each preview shot must include a renderable `scene` payload with concrete headline, description, actions, and rows/fields/stats for the UI preview.
## Implementation contract
- Start from local `ui/src/components/ui` shadcn-style primitives; do not create a second component system.
- Apply `/katagami/shadcn/sextant/registry-theme.json` variables, then use these recipes for composition and state design.
- Preserve Katagami token names as source metadata; shadcn semantic names are only the export surface.
- Do: Plot values to the coordinate field; let position carry hierarchy.; Ration the vermilion to the live or fixed figure only.; Set every number in tabular mono so columns align.; Separate modules with hairline rules and cyan corner ticks instead of boxes.; Keep the ground deep midnight ink; let bone type and one signal ink do the work.
- Do not: Do not stamp the accent bar on every section or flood a panel with signal ink.; Do not centre headlines or balance the page symmetrically.; Do not add rounded friendly cards, soft shadows, or glass.; Do not use the serif-italic headline swap or an oversized italic serif.; Do not default the ground to white; this language lives in the dark.
## Copy-paste component example
This generated starter proves the import shape. Production Katagami agents should replace it with a language-specific product composition.
